Premium banking is undergoing a major change as financial institutions increasingly compete on more than interest rates, investment products and access to credit. In Ghana, Absa Bank is positioning itself to take advantage of this shift by connecting affluent banking with luxury travel, exclusive entertainment and lifestyle experiences.
The changing expectations of wealthy customers are forcing banks to rethink what premium service should look like. While financial solutions remain central to banking relationships, affluent customers are increasingly looking for privileges that extend into their personal lives, from access to international airport lounges to personalised assistance and exclusive social experiences.
Absa Bank Ghana is responding to this emerging demand through its Signature and Infinite Card propositions, which seek to turn everyday banking transactions into opportunities for premium lifestyle experiences.
Luxury Spending Is Changing the Banking Game
The traditional definition of premium banking is gradually becoming outdated. Access to credit facilities, investment opportunities and personalised financial advice may distinguish premium customers from ordinary account holders, but these services are no longer the only considerations influencing customer loyalty.
Affluent consumers are increasingly placing greater value on experiences, convenience and access to exclusive opportunities. Banks are therefore recognising that their relationships with wealthy customers must extend beyond the financial transactions they facilitate.
A 2024 Mastercard study of affluent consumers across 23 markets provides an indication of this changing behaviour. The research found that 59% of affluent consumers prefer spending on experiences rather than acquiring additional material possessions.
Travel, entertainment and dining are among the experiences gaining importance as wealthy consumers seek more meaningful ways to enjoy their financial success.
This changing preference is creating an opportunity for banks to differentiate their premium products through benefits that customers can experience outside traditional banking environments.
Rather than relying exclusively on cashback, discounts and reward points, financial institutions are increasingly exploring personalised privileges that strengthen emotional connections with their customers.
Absa Turns Premium Cards into Lifestyle Passports
Absa Bank Ghana is seeking to capture this opportunity through the benefits attached to its Signature and Infinite Cards.
The cards offer customers access to more than 1,200 airport lounges worldwide, concierge services, multi-trip international travel insurance and discounts through selected partner institutions.
These benefits are particularly relevant to customers whose professional and personal commitments involve frequent international travel.
Airport lounge access, for instance, offers travellers an opportunity to escape crowded terminals and enjoy a more comfortable environment before boarding their flights. Concierge services provide additional convenience, while international travel insurance offers protection during overseas trips.
Together, these privileges position the cards as more than payment instruments. They become part of a broader lifestyle proposition designed around the expectations of affluent customers.
Charles Addo, Director of Personal and Private Banking at Absa Bank Ghana, says changing expectations among affluent customers are shaping how banks think about customer value.
“Banking today is about much more than facilitating transactions. Affluent customers want solutions that fit seamlessly into their lives and deliver value in the moments that matter most. That includes travel, lifestyle, convenience and access. Our Signature and Infinite Cards are designed with those expectations in mind, and initiatives such as the Champagne in Africa experience are one way of bringing that proposition to life for our customers.”

His comments reflect a broader industry shift in which financial institutions are increasingly expected to understand the lifestyles and aspirations of their most valuable customers.

Champagne Festival Becomes Part of Absa’s Strategy
One of the more distinctive elements of Absa’s premium banking proposition is its association with the Champagne in Africa Festival.
The event celebrates French champagne alongside African fashion, art, food and music, bringing together different expressions of luxury and contemporary African culture.
Through successive editions of the campaign, Absa has connected its premium card offering to experiential rewards, giving eligible Signature and Infinite Card customers opportunities to attend the festival based on their card usage.
The initiative continues in 2026, with Ghanaian customers holding either an Absa Signature or Infinite Card having the opportunity to earn attendance at this year’s festival in Johannesburg, South Africa, by participating in the campaign.
The approach introduces a different dimension to traditional banking rewards. Instead of limiting customer benefits to financial incentives, Absa is offering access to an experience that combines international travel, entertainment and cultural engagement.
It also creates an opportunity for the bank to strengthen its relationship with customers through experiences that extend beyond its branches and digital platforms.
Competition for Affluent Customers Is Intensifying
Absa’s strategy comes at a time when banks face increasing pressure to differentiate their services in a competitive financial environment.
Premium customers often have access to multiple financial institutions, making loyalty more difficult to secure through conventional banking products alone.
Competitive interest rates, investment opportunities and convenient digital services remain important, but lifestyle privileges can provide additional reasons for customers to maintain their relationships with a particular bank.
This is particularly relevant as affluent consumers become more selective about how they spend their money and increasingly expect financial institutions to recognise their individual preferences.
The ability to combine financial services with travel, entertainment and personalised experiences could therefore become an important competitive advantage.
The Future of Banking Beyond Transactions
Absa’s growing emphasis on lifestyle benefits reflects how the boundaries between financial services and luxury experiences are gradually disappearing.
The bank’s Signature and Infinite Cards demonstrate an approach that connects financial products with the aspirations of customers who want convenience, access and memorable experiences alongside traditional banking services.
As competition for affluent customers intensifies, institutions that successfully integrate financial solutions with lifestyle privileges could find new ways to build loyalty and deepen customer relationships.
The challenge will be ensuring that these benefits deliver consistent value and remain relevant to the people they are designed to serve.
Ultimately, premium banking is becoming about more than how much money customers can access or invest. It is increasingly about what their banking relationships make possible in the way they travel, work and enjoy life.
