GSE Ends Week on Positive Note as Market Indices Recover

The Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) brought the trading week to a cautiously positive close, with its benchmark indices recording modest gains after several sessions of mixed market performance.

Although the latest rebound offered investors some relief, underlying trading figures revealed a market still struggling to build consistent momentum, with weekly losses persisting across key indicators.

The market closed the final trading session of the week with 2,928,322 shares changing hands, representing a total market value of GH¢6.32 million. This marked a significant 194% increase in trading volume compared with Thursday, November 5, signalling a considerable rise in investor activity.

However, the surge in the number of shares traded did not translate into higher transaction value. Instead, market turnover declined by 9%, suggesting that the increased activity was largely concentrated in shares trading at relatively lower prices.

The contrasting movements in volume and turnover highlighted the mixed nature of the session, even as the broader market managed to finish on a stronger footing.

GSE Composite Index Stages Modest Recovery

The benchmark GSE Composite Index (GSE-CI) delivered one of the session’s most encouraging performances, gaining 33.58 points, equivalent to a 0.24% increase, to close at 14,000.37 points.

The improvement provided a welcome lift to the market after a difficult week in which the index shed 2.11% of its value.

Despite Friday’s recovery, the GSE-CI remained down 0.38% over the four-week period. Its year-to-date performance, however, continued to reflect the remarkable gains recorded by Ghanaian equities since the beginning of the year, with the index maintaining an impressive 59.63% appreciation.

The performance suggests that while short-term market conditions have become less favourable, the broader rally in Ghanaian equities remains substantial.

Investors who entered the market earlier in the year have continued to benefit from the strong cumulative appreciation, although recent fluctuations indicate that maintaining those gains could become increasingly challenging.

Financial Stocks Index Also Recovers

The GSE Financial Stocks Index (GSE-FSI) also moved higher during the final session, closing at 7,269.22 points.

However, the improvement in the financial stocks segment was not enough to erase its losses across longer trading periods. The index recorded a 1.61% decline over the week and a 1.98% loss over four weeks.

Its year-to-date appreciation stood at 56.42%, demonstrating that financial equities have also delivered considerable returns despite the recent moderation in market performance.

The contrasting performance across the daily, weekly and annual periods points to an important development in the market. Although Friday’s gains offered some encouragement, the latest figures suggest that investors are still navigating a period of short-term uncertainty following the substantial appreciation recorded earlier in the year.

Dannex Ayrton Leads Market Winners

Individual stock performances added another layer of excitement to the trading session, with seven listed companies recording price gains against five losers.

Dannex Ayrton Starwin emerged as the strongest performer, appreciating by an impressive 9.47% to close at GH¢1.04 per share.

Cocoa Processing Company followed closely, gaining 8.89%, while Digicut Production & Advertising advanced by 6.06%. Intravenous Infusions also enjoyed a positive session, recording a 3.70% increase in its share price.

These gains provided a significant boost to market sentiment, particularly as investors searched for opportunities among listed companies amid the mixed performance of the broader indices.

The performance of Dannex Ayrton Starwin and Cocoa Processing Company was particularly notable, as both companies recorded substantial price increases within a single trading session.

Fan Milk and GOIL Suffer Heavy Losses

While several equities enjoyed strong buying interest, others came under considerable selling pressure.

Fan Milk emerged as the worst-performing stock, declining by 6.81% to close at GH¢13.00 per share.

Ghana Oil Company (GOIL) followed with a 5.45% depreciation, while Kasapreko lost 2.73%. SIC Insurance Company also ended the session lower, shedding 1.06% of its share price.

The losses among these companies demonstrate that the market’s recovery was not broad enough to lift every listed equity.

The divergence between gainers and losers also reflects the stock-specific nature of investor activity, with market participants appearing selective about the equities attracting their attention.

Kasapreko Commands Trading Activity

In terms of trading volume, Kasapreko dominated the session, recording approximately 2.4 million shares, making it the most actively traded equity on the exchange.

MTN Ghana followed with 179,930 shares, while CalBank recorded 160,653 shares. Intravenous Infusions completed the leading group with 49,465 shares traded.

Kasapreko’s performance was particularly striking, accounting for the overwhelming majority of the 2.93 million shares exchanged during the session.

The concentration of trading activity in a single equity also helps explain why the substantial increase in market volume did not produce a corresponding rise in total turnover.

Overall, 28 listed equities participated in trading, reflecting continued investor engagement across different segments of the exchange.

GSE Market Capitalisation Holds at GH¢263.3 Billion

Despite the mixed performance across individual stocks and the weekly losses recorded by the major indices, the total market capitalisation of the Ghana Stock Exchange remained substantial at GH¢263.3 billion, equivalent to approximately US$22.5 billion.

The valuation underscores the significant expansion of Ghana’s equity market over the course of the year, supported by the impressive year-to-date gains recorded by both the GSE Composite Index and the Financial Stocks Index.

However, the latest trading session also highlights the challenge of sustaining market momentum after a period of exceptional appreciation.

Friday’s gains have given the exchange a positive finish to the week, but the persistent weekly losses suggest that investors may still be waiting for stronger signals before committing additional capital.

The next trading sessions will therefore be important in determining whether the modest recovery can develop into a more sustained market rebound or remain a temporary interruption in the recent downward movement.

For now, the Ghana Stock Exchange has ended the week with a much-needed improvement, even as the broader market awaits a stronger and more convincing recovery.
