Gyakye Quayson’s Case: Trial Unfair- Marietta Brew

Marietta Brew Appiah-Oppong, a former Attorney General (AG), has criticized and called it unfair the way the trial of Gyakye Quayson is handled.

According to her, it is unfair to pursue the issue with the zeal and zealousness that Godfred Dame appears to be doing at the moment. She declared that she did not believe that this was in the best interests of the Assin North Constituency or the country as a whole to continue in that direction.

The former AG claimed that because the people have demonstrated that Gyakye Quayson was the candidate they wanted to represent them in Parliament, the re-election of Mr. Quayson as the MP for Assin North was sufficient justification for the AG to enter a nolle prosequi to stop the trial.

“Despite the Supreme Court annulling his election and being expunged from Parliament, he has been re-elected by the people of Assin North, and they have re-emphasised that this is the person we want to represent us in Parliament.

“Regarding all these circumstances and the fact that the people have chosen to re-elect him in the spirit of unity and fairness and justice I think that the AG ought to enter a nolle prosequi.”

As a result, she declared that she supported the former AG, Ayikoi Otoo, and the Dormaahene in their requests that the AG enters a nolle prosequi to halt the MP’s prosecution.

“I totally agree with my learned senior Ayikoi Otoo and I know that the call was also made earlier by the Dormaahene. I agree with them that this is the time that regarding the circumstances, the AG ought to enter a nolle prosequi.”

However, the Attorney General, Godfred Yeboah Dame, has voiced concern about remarks made by people in high positions that might have an effect on James Gyakye Quayson’s ongoing criminal prosecution.

Dame is especially concerned about requests to overturn the high court judge’s decision to regularly hear the perjury case against the MP-elect. He emphasized that such comments could have an impact on how fairly the matter is decided. Additionally, he stated that any remarks that harm the administration of justice should not be permitted.

Arthur K Praises Dormaahene

Dr. Kobina Arthur Kennedy, a founding member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), attacked harshly those who disagreed with Dormaahene Oseadeeyo Agyemang Badu II’s request to halt the Gyakye Quayson criminal trial.

The former NPP candidate for President claimed in a report that while the Paramount Chief’s call was motivated by patriotism, it should not have come from a justice of the court, as he is.

“As a citizen not inclined to spectatoring, I find it strange that those who are so riled about the inappropriateness of the Omanhene’s comments had nothing to say when, on the eve of the Assin North election, the President of the Republic, HE Nana Akufo-Addo, a civil rights attorney and the boss of the Attorney General responsible for prosecuting Mr. Quayson called him a future prisoner at a political rally.

“Mr. President, what happened to the presumption of innocence that is the bedrock of our constitutional Republic? After your remark, how can we be sure that the decision to prosecute Mr. Quayson is not motivated by politics rather than law?”
