Gregory Promise Bortey Newman, who is popularly known as King Promise, has said that there is no need to have personal contact with an artist before giving out support to promote the artist.
The sensational singer noted, in an interview on a popular radio station in Accra, that even though there is some sort of support given out, it mostly goes out to artists that are well known, but for the underdogs being supported, there is a lot more work to be done.
“I feel like there is a lot more to be done when it comes to support and love. For me how I work, I work from the heart and freely like nothing holds me back. For instance, I had two people’s music and I have never seen them before. I shared their songs and to date, I have not met them before. I don’t feel like I need to know you or anything to push you or support you when the music is actually good”.
He further emphasized that there is a need for Ghanaian artists to come together to push Ghanaian music just like their fellow Nigerian artists are doing.
“I feel like individuals, as artists, as industry players we need to come together a little bit more and the main agenda should be Ghana than individuals, like this is my friend or I know this one.
“The music should come first before anything like our Nigerian brothers. They support each other. You see all these big shots coming together and at the end of the day there is a big way for Nigeria but then in Ghana, everyone is thinking about themselves”.
He also revealed that the only time Ghanaians will acknowledge an artist’s music is when they have a massive following already, but for that reason, then your music career will not see the limelight.
“I feel like when a Ghanaian drops a song unless he has some sort of crazy following then ‘them dey sleep on am’. Honestly, acknowledgment or more push will make people know of the artist but a lot of new artist coming from Nigeria no one knows them but then they are big in Ghana because everyone is talking about them…I feel like we should embrace our own more because I know Ghanaians love good music…but I feel we should embrace our own more” the artist noted.
Touching on the issue of politics he said he did not receive an endorsement proposal from any political party and that even if he was given the opportunity, he would not have accepted it.
He added that it will be best if political activities are not mixed up with an artist’s music career as it could create a lot of problems for the artist.
“No, not at all I didn’t have anyone approaching me for any endorsements. I would not have accepted actually because it’s not really my thing. I just focus on my music. I don’t really believe in it because I think politicians are meant to do their politics and artists are meant to do their work”.
He went on to add that the only promotion he could laud was peace and that accounted for him joining other artists to promote peace during the December 7 elections.
