We Are Ready To Pull Out From Strasburg Convention, If ECHR Blocks Our Rwanda Plan, Home Secretary Reveals

Home Secretary, Suella Braverman.

The Home Secretary of the United Kingdom, Suella Braverman has claimed that, the government would consider pulling out from the Strasburg convention, that established the European Court for Human Right (ECHR), if the court blocks their plans to relocate some asylum seekers to Rwanda.

In an interview, Braverman asserted that, the European Court for Human Right has been politicized, and that, they would pull every strings to resist any opposition from the court, labeling it as interventionist.

When questioned whether this meant quitting the European Convention on Human Rights, Braverman revealed that, the administration’s intensions have been made clear, though, there are some oppositions within Downing Street.

“We’re very clear that the Rwanda scheme complies with our international obligations, and that there’s a path to stopping the boats, which is in conformity with the international regime. If we’re thwarted in the courts, there must be no stone left unturned.”

“This is not about trying to succeed on the pledge. This is about succeeding on the pledge and stopping the boats.”

According to the Home Secretary, the court was an obstacle to the asylum policy with Rwanda, last year.

“Last year we saw very plainly how the Strasbourg court thwarted our attempt for flights to take off to Rwanda through an opaque process at the last minute, which undermined the decisions of this government.

“It’s a politicized court, its interventionist, it’s treading on the territory of national sovereignty, but no one’s talking about leaving the ECHR right now.”

The Tory administration is seeking a review at the Supreme Court, after an appeal court ruling declared its asylum policy with Kigali, illegal.

“If we are thwarted by the courts, or indeed by Strasbourg, then we will have to do whatever it takes, ultimately, to ensure that we can stop the boats.”

When queried on the rumors of hosting illegal migrants on an electronic tags, Braverman further claimed that, the administration has been considering all options available to it.

“We’ve just passed our landmark legislation in the form of the Illegal Migration Act. That will enable us to detain and remove those who have arrived here illegally. We need to await the outcome of our litigation in the Supreme Court before we can start operationalizing the main aspects of the act.”

On the other hand, despite the threats of legal action from the Fire Brigade over the “death trap” vessel, Braverman insisted that, the Bibby Stockholm vessel is safe to host migrants. Meanwhile, the government was forced to remove over thirty inmates from the vessel, after a deadly virus was identified on the barge.

“We’re waiting for the processes to complete and once they are done, we will be moving people back on to the barge. I’m very confident about the safety standards on the barge.”

Suella Braverman, Home Secretary UK.

Braverman said that, the recent removal of migrants from the vessel was very disappointing. She apportioned blame on engineers and the Dorset local authorities for their inability to finish tests before the barge was used.

“We followed all the protocols from the local health and safety executives. A large part of that work was contracted out to third parties. I’m very disappointed that those processes were not properly completed.”
