Minority Reaches An Agreement With Police On #OccupyBOGProtest Route

Hon. Ato Forson, Minority Leader

The minority in parliament has announced that it has reached an agreement with the Ghana Police Service concerning the route for #OccupyBOGProtest scheduled for Tuesday, 3rd October, 2023.

The Minority Leader, Hon. Cassiel Ato Baah Forson, stated that the leadership would soon make the route known to the public.

He added that, the protest will come off notwithstanding the circumstances that had been encountered in their quest to organize the protest.

“I can assure, and I want to assure the people of Ghana that, we have come to an agreement with the Ghana Police Service. Yesterday, I spoke to the Regional Commander. He has written to us officially. I have the letter. I will publish it tomorrow.”

Hon. Cassiel Ato Baah Forson

He indicated that the Accra Regional Command of the Ghana Police Service had pledged its commitment to ensuring the safety of all protesters and hinted that Obra Spot will be the converging point for the demonstration.

“The regional commander has agreed to provide us with security starting from Obra Spot to our destination.”

Hon. Cassiel Ato Baah Forson

Dr. Ato Cassiel Hayford also explained the purpose of the demonstration as an expression of revulsion against the Central Bank of Ghana following its losses in the 2022 financial year.

“We are going over there to demonstrate and express our revulsion against the Central Bank of Ghana.”

Hon. Cassiel Ato Baah Forson

According to Mr Cassiel, Ghana lost $6.3 billion of its external reserves because the Governor and his deputies printed up to GHS 77 billion for reckless government expenditure and charged citizens to join the scheduled protest against the Central Bank.

“Ghana lost $6.3 billion of its external reserves because Governor Addison, the Printer, and his deputies illegally printed up to ¢77 billion for reckless gov’t expenditure! He also called on Aln Kyerematen’s new movement, the Movement for Change, to join us on October 3, at Obra Sports to express our revulsion against the BOG for destroying our livelihoods!”

The Minority Leader and Member of Parliament for Ajumako Enyan Esiam Constituency hence called on Ghanaians to take part in the demonstration which according to him, is based on facts. He added that the Bank of Ghana had run into negative equity and was more or less bankrupt.

“We are calling on every Ghanaian to join us to express our revulsion based on facts at the central bank. We know that as we speak, the central bank is more or less bankrupt. They have run losses that we have negative equity to the tune of GHS 55.1 billion. And there is the need for you to join us.”

Pressure Groups And Political Parties To Support #OcuppyBOGProtest

He also made known that the caucus was not organizing the protest alone. The minority had thus mobilized the support of pressure groups and political parties. Additionally, he made a call on Alan Kyerematen’s new movement, the Movement for Change to join the demonstration.

“We have actually mobilized the support of pressure groups, the likes of Arise Ghana. We have mobilized the support of political parties, and now you have seen a new movement, the butterfly. We are calling on the Butterfly to join us.”

Hon. Cassiel Ato Baah Forson

The Minority in Parliament suspended its planned protest against the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Ernest Addison. This came after the court, hearing a police application to injunct the protest over security concerns, and adjourned ruling on a preliminary objection raised by lawyers of the MPs to Friday, September 8.

But following an injunction application by the police on grounds that the route for the street protest should be changed and the subsequent decision by the High Court in Accra’s decision to make a determination on the preliminary objection raised by the Minority on Friday, September 8, the Minority decided to postpone the protest.
