Securing The Set: Lydia Forson’s Call For Safer Filmmaking In Africa

Lydia Forson

The movie industry in Africa would greatly benefit from improved infrastructure and the implementation of robust safety protocols and support mechanisms. This would not only enhance the overall production quality but also ensure the safety and well-being of all stakeholders involved.

Establishing well-equipped film studios and production facilities across different regions in Africa would provide filmmakers with access to advanced technology, equipment, and resources. This would improve the quality of productions and enable filmmakers to explore their creative vision more effectively.

Implementing comprehensive training programs and educational initiatives would help aspiring filmmakers and industry professionals to hone their skills and stay updated with the latest industry standards and practices. This can be achieved through partnerships with established film schools, offering workshops, and organizing mentorship programs.

Developing and enforcing stringent safety protocols and regulations is crucial to safeguard the lives and well-being of everyone involved in the production process. This includes measures to ensure the safety of cast and crew members, proper handling of equipment, adherence to set construction and design standards, and adequate medical support on sets.

Strengthening financial support mechanisms, such as grants, film funds, and tax incentives, can help attract investment and provide essential funding to stimulate the industry’s growth.

In the wake of the tragic passing of Nigerian actor Junior Pope, renowned Ghanaian actress Lydia Forson sounded a call to action for improved saftey logistics within Africa’s movie industry.

According to her, there should be serious discussions on the safety and infrastructure challenges facing filmmakers across the continent to mitigate the risks encountered by stakeholders particularly actors and production crew.

“I’m so triggered by this loss. So many risks we take that we shouldn’t, so many times we’ve survived near-death experiences; all in the bid to entertain and tell stories. Our industries need and deserve better than just our passion. This is why some of us fight so hard for it.”

Lydia Forson

The actress stressed on the urgent need for systemic changes and and the implementation of robust safety protocols and logistical support mechanisms in the movie industry to safeguard the lives of its stakeholders.

These systematic changes and implementation of robust safety protocols and support mechanisms in the movie industry would require collaborative efforts from governments, industry professionals, and stakeholders. By addressing these areas, Africa’s movie industry can unlock its full potential and thrive on both the local and global stage.

Actress Condemns Budget Constraints On Production Set

The budget constraint on a production set is often seen as a necessity rather than a violation of creativity or a refusal of basic welfare needs. While it is true that budget constraints can limit the resources available for creative endeavors and may require compromises, they are an essential part of managing a project effectively.

Budget constraints help ensure that resources are allocated efficiently and responsibly. They provide boundaries within which creative decisions must be made, encouraging innovation and problem-solving. Without budget constraints, there would be no need to prioritize or make trade-offs, which could lead to excessive spending and inefficient use of resources.

It is crucial to prioritize the safety and well-being of the cast and crew on a production set. Basic welfare needs, such as providing a safe working environment, appropriate accommodations, and fair compensation, should always be addressed, regardless of budget limitations.

While it is understandable that budget constraints can be challenging and may limit certain aspects of a production, they are a reality that most projects face. Effective management and creative problem-solving can help navigate these constraints while still achieving artistic goals and meeting the basic welfare needs of the team.

However, actress Joselyn Dumas is of the view that creatives should not be made to die avoidable deaths just because of budget constraints.

Joselyn Dumas, who is a known name in the movie industry indicated that it is not right to rid actors and actresses of their basic welfare needs, stating that it is a human rights violation that should not be countenanced going forward.

“Being refused the basic welfare needs on a production/film set in the name of budget constraint is a total violation of a creative. May our lives not end abruptly in pursuit of our daily bread???? We must do better.”

Joselyn Dumas

She made this statement as a result of the untimely death of Nollywood actor Pope Junior, adding that it was preventable.
