Mahama’s Appeal as an Experience Candidate

In the political landscape of Ghana, the 2024 elections are fast approaching, and the Presidential race is shaping up to be one of the most competitive in recent memory. Among the contenders, former President John Dramani Mahama has emerged as a significant figure, leveraging his experience and tenure in office to appeal to Ghanaians as candidate of experience.

John Dramani Mahama’s appeal to Ghanaians to elect him as an experienced candidate over Vice President Dr. Bawumia in the 2024 elections is a multifaceted argument that touches on his political experience, leadership style, and the current political climate in Ghana.

“I have been President before, and I had the experience. There is no school where you go and pay school fees, enroll, and say, I want to learn how to be President. You have to learn on the job. Luckily, I got the experience of working with a very good, honest, and one of the best Presidents we have had in Ghana, Professor John Evans Atta Mills. As President, we did some things well; we built a lot of infrastructure. We provided health facilities in many districts and regions. We provided educational facilities.”

Mahama’s appeal is rooted in his tenure as President from 2012 to 2017, a period marked by significant economic challenges and policy decisions that have left a lasting impact on the country’s development. His experience in navigating these challenges, coupled with his political acumen, positions him as a candidate who understands the complexities of governance and the need for strategic leadership in times of crisis.

This experience, however, is not without its criticisms. Critics argue that Mahama’s administration failed to adequately address these issues and implement effective policies to curb corruption. It is crucial to question whether Mahama’s experience reflects a successful track record and if his leadership during his previous tenure would benefit the country in the future.

Mahama’s appeal to voters is based on the notion that his experience surpasses that of Dr. Bawumia, who currently serves as the Vice President. However, it is important to objectively assess the achievements and contributions of both candidates.

Dr. Bawumia, on the other hand, has been instrumental in implementing economic policies aimed at stabilizing Ghana’s economy. His role in the implementation of the One District, One Factory initiative, the Planting for Food and Jobs program, and the digitalization of government services has been widely acknowledged.

However, the NPP’s tenure has been marred by economic anxieties, austerity policies, and a cost-of-living crisis, which have led to widespread dissatisfaction among the Ghanaian populace. This situation has put the NPP in a precarious position, with many questioning the party’s ability to address the economic challenges facing the country.

One of the primary concerns raised by critics of Mahama’s appeal is whether he has learned from the mistakes made during his previous presidency. Voters need to assess whether Mahama has developed a solid plan to address the issues that plagued his previous administration, such as corruption, energy crises, and economic stability.

Additionally, voters should question whether Mahama has evolved his approach to governance, considering the changing dynamics and needs of Ghanaian society. Adapting to new challenges, embracing innovation, and demonstrating an ability to learn from past mistakes are essential qualities for any candidate seeking to lead a country effectively.

“Not everybody gets that opportunity to become president; you go out of office and you get the opportunity to come back again, and so I know that in the four years coming, I will be a much better president than even when I was president. One, because of the experience that I have had as president before, and two, because I had the opportunity to reflect on my period as president.”

While experience is an important factor, it is crucial to assess Mahama’s record as President, compare it with the achievements of Dr. Bawumia, and determine whether he has learned from his previous mistakes.

Voters should prioritize analyzing the candidates’ proposed policies, abilities to address ongoing challenges, and their vision for Ghana’s future. Ultimately, the decision should be based on which candidate offers the most comprehensive and effective plan for addressing the needs of the Ghanaian people in the years to come.
