The Public Relations Unit of the Ministry of Finance has announced that Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam, Minister for Finance, is leading Ghana’s delegation to the African Development Bank Group (AfDB) Annual Meetings starting today in Nairobi, Kenya.

The 2024 Annual Meetings, themed “Africa’s Transformation, the African Development Bank Group, and the Reforms of the Global Financial Architecture,” are expected to convene a broad spectrum of financial leaders.

This includes Ministers of Finance and Governors of Central Banks from across Africa, representatives from non-African regional shareholders, leaders from key global and regional financial and development institutions, and their technical teams. They will discuss the Bank’s performance, policies, and programs aimed at enhancing its projects on the African continent.

“The delegation will participate in the statutory meetings of the AGM and hold bilateral meetings with some development partners. These include a High-Level Presidential Dialogue, the Governor’s Dialogue, Ghana’s Constituency in the bank meeting, and a High-Level Policy and Reform Dialogue.”

According to the Ministry, Ghana’s delegation, led by Dr. Amin Adam, also includes Hon. Dr. Alex Ampaabeng, Deputy Minister for Finance, Mrs. Elsie Addo Awadzi, 2nd Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana, along with officials from the Ministry of Finance (MoF), the Bank of Ghana (BoG), and the Ghana Infrastructural Investment Fund.

The Ministry of Finance in the press statement indicated that the bilateral meetings will involve discussions with prominent entities such as the President of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, the Kuwaiti Fund, Standard Chartered Bank, ABSA Bank, BADEA, and the OPEC Fund.

Additionally, the Ministry’s statement highlighted that Dr. Amin Adam will contribute as a panelist in two high-level plenary knowledge events: “Financing Africa’s Transformation in a Changing Global Financial System” and the African Capacity Building Foundation (ACBF) event on “Leadership Skills Needed to Improve PFM Performance in Africa.”

A significant highlight of the AGM includes the celebration of AfDB’s 60th anniversary, the launch of the African Economic Outlook 2024, and initial discussions on the roadmap for electing a new President of the Bank to succeed Dr. Adesina Akiwumi, whose two-term tenure will conclude next year.

The Annual Meetings of the African Development Bank Group serve as a vital platform for knowledge dissemination among high-level decision-makers in Africa, key officials from bilateral and multilateral development agencies, leading academics, and representatives from non-governmental organizations, civil society, and the private sector.

This year’s meetings, held from May 27-31 in Nairobi, Kenya, follow previous hosts Ghana in 2022 and Egypt in 2023. The theme, “Africa’s Transformation, African Development Bank Group, and Reform of the Global Financial Architecture,” underscores the focus on the Bank’s 59th Annual Assembly and the 50th meeting of the African Development Fund.

This announcement by the Public Relations Unit of the Ministry of Finance underscores Ghana’s active engagement with the AfDB and its commitment to leveraging international platforms to advance national and continental development goals.
