New Regional Minister Inspects Projects Across Accra Metropolis

The newly appointed Greater Accra Regional Minister, Hon. Titus Glover, has conducted a comprehensive inspection of ongoing infrastructure projects across the Accra Metropolis. Accompanied by the Mayor of Accra, Hon. Elizabeth Kwatsoe Sackey, the Regional Minister meticulously evaluated the status of various projects aimed at enhancing the city’s infrastructure and services.

Among the projects inspected were the newly completed building for the Independence Avenue Cluster Schools, the new AMA Sanitation Court at the Old AMA Office, and the Opera Square, designated for a pending Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) Project.

Speaking to the media after the inspection, Hon. Titus Glover expressed gratitude to the Mayor of Accra and the Bank of Ghana for their contributions to the construction and remodeling efforts at the Independence Avenue Cluster of Schools, which aim to enhance teaching and learning.

“We are in partnership with the Ga Traditional Council to conduct periodic clean-up exercises, particularly in the Central Business District, to enhance sanitation in Accra. I call on residents to collaborate with the government in transforming the city into a cleaner environment.”

Hon. Titus Glover, Greater Accra Regional Minister

Hon. Titus Glover further urged traders to clear their goods from the roadside to alleviate congestion, create space for pedestrians, and reduce vehicular traffic. He warned that traders who disregard this directive would face severe penalties as a deterrent to others.

The newly constructed sanitation court, designed to prosecute those violating AMA bylaws and other city regulations, was highlighted by Hon. Glover as a key tool in bringing order and cleanliness to Accra. At Opera Square, he engaged with head porters (Kayayei) and encouraged them to embrace the Vice President’s initiative dedicated to empowering head porters, enhancing their socio-economic status, and prioritizing their children’s education.

The inspection tour allowed the Minister and Mayor to assess the progress of the projects, identify any challenges, and strategize on the way forward.

In addressing the city’s sanitation issues, the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), in collaboration with Sanitation Ghana, a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), organized a massive clean-up exercise and desilting works at the Agbogbloshie Market. The primary goal of the exercise was to improve sanitation and food safety, thereby enhancing the living conditions of Accra’s residents.

Mayor Sackey emphasized the importance of continuing these exercises to avoid health complications associated with filthy environments. She advised traders on best practices for handling foodstuffs for public consumption and urged them to use nets to protect consumables in the future. She also reminded traders about the sanitation court’s role in enforcing AMA by-laws and ensuring compliance.

“I am sure the market women will abide by it and we will have a continuous sanitation and clean-up exercise. The Regional Minister has given us a work plan to sustain the exercise,” Mayor Sackey stated.

She also charged Market Queens to prevent traders from mounting their containers on drains to allow for regular desilting works and warned against corrupt practices that facilitate such activities at the market.

Dr. Derek Otoo Essam, Director of Sanitation Ghana, reiterated the NGO’s commitment to addressing issues of filth and sanitation across Ghana. He explained that the partnership with AMA was inaugurated to mark National Sanitation Day and to tackle the severe pollution and flooding problems at Agbogbloshie Market.

Vice President of Agbogbloshie Market, Hannah Naa Borkah Addy, reminded traders of the sanitation court’s purpose in punishing individuals who pollute the environment. She pleaded with traders to sustain the exercise to transform the market.

The inspection and subsequent activities underscore the government’s commitment to improving Accra’s infrastructure and sanitation, aiming for a cleaner and more organized city.
