In a significant address at the durbar of chiefs and people of the Benkum division of the Akyem Abuakwa State in Begoro, Osagyefuo Amoatia Ofori Panin, the Okyenhene, emphatically called on the government to ensure that teachers receive the remuneration they rightfully deserve for their hard work and dedication. He underscored the pivotal role of teachers in delivering quality education, stressing that their motivation is integral to the educational success of students across Ghana.

Osagyefuo Amoatia Ofori Panin highlighted the indispensable contribution of teachers, asserting that their importance in the educational framework cannot be overstated. He urged the government to expedite the payment of allowances and ensure fair remuneration for teachers, recognizing that their well-being directly influences the quality of education delivered to students.

“The future of our children is dependent on quality education and skills development. Today, every Ghanaian child has the means to free SHS education. We must note that it’s not just about passing through the school.

“There must be quality education. If you provide all the amenities and you don’t pay the teacher well, it affects the children’s education.”

Addressing the durbar, Osagyefuo praised the free Senior High School (SHS) policy introduced by President Akufo-Addo’s administration, acknowledging it as one of the most significant investments in Ghana’s educational sector. The policy, which ensures every Ghanaian child has access to free secondary education, represents a monumental step towards educational equality and opportunity. However, he pointed out that several challenges still need addressing to ensure the program’s full success.

In addition to calling for better teacher remuneration, Osagyefuo Amoatia Ofori Panin advocated for the provision of adequate classroom space, tables, chairs, beds, and other essential facilities that create a conducive learning environment. He emphasized that while infrastructure is critical, the human element—teachers—must not be neglected, as they are the backbone of any educational system.

“Teacher motivation and good remuneration are inextricably linked with quality education,” Osagyefuo Amoatia Ofori Panin noted. “If you provide all the amenities and you don’t pay the teacher well, it affects the children’s education.”

The Okyenhene’s remarks come at a crucial time when the Ghanaian education system is undergoing significant reforms. His appeal for improved teacher remuneration is seen as a call to action for the government to recognize and reward the critical role teachers play in shaping the nation’s future. By ensuring that teachers are well-compensated, the government can help foster a more dedicated and motivated teaching workforce, ultimately leading to better educational outcomes for students.

In his address, Osagyefuo Amoatia Ofori Panin also touched on the broader theme of leadership. He urged leaders to serve with humility and respect, reminding them that true leadership is about leaving a positive and lasting legacy. He emphasized that material wealth is not the measure of a leader’s greatness, but rather the impact they have on the lives of others.

“There is no rich man in the world who has been buried with his fleet of cars or houses. The memories they leave in the lives of others and their communities rather stays forever.

“There is power in humility, there is authority in humility, we don’t use power to enrich ourselves, we use power to serve diligently. The greatest currency is humility and service.”

The Okyenhene’s call for improved teacher remuneration and his advocacy for servant leadership comes at a time when Ghana is grappling with economic challenges and striving for educational reform. His words serve as a poignant reminder of the fundamental values that should guide both leadership and educational policies.

By prioritizing the welfare of teachers and emphasizing the importance of humble and impactful leadership, Osagyefuo Amoatia Ofori Panin’s address is a clarion call for a more just and effective approach to governance and education in Ghana.

As the nation reflects on these powerful messages, it remains to be seen how the government will respond to the Okyenhene’s call to action. The hope is that this will spur meaningful changes that enhance the quality of education and leadership in Ghana, ensuring a brighter future for all.
