Dr. Kwame Asah-Asante, a Political Scientist, has pointed out that the Trades Union Congress (TUC) and Organized Labor are examples of interest groups, which exist to advocate for the welfare of their members and shape government policies to align with their interests.
He noted that Organized Labor is a formidable entity, boasting a robust structure, extensive membership, and dedicated leadership, making it a significant player in the landscape of labor relations and policymaking.
“Anytime that they want to use any of their means of operation, that is even if they want to resort to the use of public opinion tools such as lockouts, demonstrations, strikes, then, you realize that the holders of political power are shaking and that’s exactly what we are experiencing”.
“It is incumbent upon the government to address it head-on. Failure of which, the government will incur the wrath of labor unions more. Now you will not have much impact but if it drags and all the calls that they are making fall on deaf ears, I am afraid it will have serious implications on our voter choices relative to unions because a hungry man is always an angry man”.

Dr. Asah-Asante additionally noted that the ongoing impasse between the government and Organized Labor is utterly unproductive and detrimental to the government’s interests, yielding no benefits whatsoever.
He cautioned the government to avoid actions that may provoke public unrest, strikes, or demonstrations, particularly from the labor sector, in this election year, and to prevent social unrest and maintain stability.
“You don’t want to experience that because the more you do that, the more pressure you bring to bear on the political system”. – Dr. Kwame Asah-Asante
He also emphasized that the government should be proactive in preventing labor disputes, like the current standoff with Organized Labor, from arising in the first place, through effective communication and timely intervention.
The Political Scientist warned that disregarding the concerns of labor would ultimately jeopardize the political prospects and reputation of the NPP government, potentially eroding its support base and undermining its chances of re-election.
Labor’s Resolve Not To Be Underestimated
Dr. Kwame Asah-Asante also noted that the government, which appears to be weak in this situation, should not underestimate Labor’s resolve, as any attempts by the government to exert its authority may be met with fierce resistance and potentially escalate into a larger confrontation.
He emphasized that the government’s typical “knee-jerk” reactions are unproductive and fail to contribute meaningfully to the ongoing dialogue, highlighting the need for a more thoughtful and constructive approach to resolving the impasse.

He conceded that this situation could ultimately work in favor of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), potentially boosting their political fortunes and providing them with a strategic advantage.
“Obviously, in a political calculation, once you stumble opposition will take bits and pieces together and then churn them out to voters. Obviously, it will get one or two voters out. Remember, it is a game of numbers, and given the electoral system…, you don’t want to lose a vote”.
Dr. Kwame Asah-Asante
Dr. Asah-Asante emphasized that in the world of politics, a single vote is equivalent to a multitude of votes.
As such, he highlighted the crucial importance of every individual vote in determining the outcome of an election and reminded politicians that securing every vote is essential to crossing the finish line and achieving victory.
Dr. Asah-Asante countered criticisms of labor’s apparent apathy towards other issues, asserting that Organized Labor has a long history of actively engaging in and speaking out on matters of significant national importance, demonstrating its commitment to the broader public good.
He pointed out that Labor has a habit of swiftly responding to issues that capture the public’s attention, leveraging its expertise to provide insightful commentary and advocacy, especially on matters about economic justice and worker rights.
“So if you look at the cannons that talked about, obviously, they are not doing something different from that. Anything that goes against their interest, they will quickly come out and speak”.
