Hughes Highlights Key Voter Concerns, Recommends Bawumia

Dr. Bawumia and NPP presidential primaries

Dr.-Bawumia, former Vice President and NPP flagbearer 2024 elections

Evron Rothschild Hughes, a presidential staffer and Economic Adviser to the Vice President, has emphasized that each election season brings a unique set of challenges.

According to him, these challenges range from questions about the character and competence of the candidates to issues that impact the daily lives of citizens.

He noted that these “kitchen-table” concerns often take center stage, shaping the priorities and decisions of voters.

“In just about 4 weeks, we, Ghanaians, will go to the polls to elect a new President and Members of Parliament. Analysts often cite certain conventional drivers of voting intentions, including economic, partisanship/party politics, and religion-ethnic considerations.

“If we take all the traditional drivers of elections in Ghana as given, and narrow the deciding factors to the cycle issues, one such special item will be that this year’s election pitches a sitting Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, against a former President (who has also been Vice President), John Dramani Mahama”.

Hughes further emphasized that neither Dr. Bawumia nor John Mahama is a mystery to the electorate; each candidate’s past actions provide a basis for comparison across various criteria.

According to him, the decision of who becomes President will hinge largely on which of the two best embodies the aspirations of Ghanaians, especially the youth and women, and demonstrates a deep understanding of the pressing issues facing the majority.

Hughes opined that voters will also consider which candidate has shown the capability, talent, and energy to deliver on transformative ideas, especially during challenging times, and has demonstrated integrity without lingering questions of corruption.

He also argued that the choice will revolve around who best represents a future of hope and stability for the next generation. “Narrowed down to these factors, the clear choice for President is Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party (NPP)’s candidate for President”.

The NPP stalwart indicated that Mahama is a “Yesterday’s Man”, stressing that Dr. Bawumia’s main rival for President, former president Mahama, has been around the public service block for a while.

“To quote a longtime observer of politics in Ghana, Mahama has been a ‘former Assemblyman, former MP, former Deputy Minister, former Minister, former Vice President and former President. He has [occupied] every post in the country’s political space’”.

Hughes noted that in 2016, Ghanaians sent a clear message on Mahama’s suitability for office with a historic defeat, and again in 2020 with the second-largest margin.

He argued that these results show the nation’s desire to move forward with new leadership, positioning Mahama as “Yesterday’s Man.”

Hughes added that Mahama has little incentive to act in Ghanaians’ best interests, given his perception of their role in his double defeat.

He also indicated the fact that the former President could not seek reelection if he were to win in 2024. “Ghanaians can fully expect a multiplication of the excesses over which they sent him packing twice over”.

Hughes Says Bawumia Embodies Future Leadership and Progress

Furthermore, Hughes stated that Bawumia represents the future, as he meets and exceeds key leadership qualities.

He credited Bawumia with positively transforming Ghanaian politics, bringing policy-focused discussions to the forefront, and inspiring young professionals to engage in politics.

While opinions on Bawumia’s ideas may vary, Hughes emphasized that he has consistently offered bold ideas for open debate and improvement, demonstrating his commitment to Ghana’s progress.

“As I once described him, Bawumia ‘is a man on a mission; to not only use new technologies to solve age-old problems but also betting on the enormous potential of a digital workforce, robotics and engineering, cybersecurity, AI, and Machine Learning, digital manufacturing, STEM and TVET skills provides for a largely youthful, industrious, and entrepreneurial population’.

“This is the future all Ghanaian youth can rally around. He championed and forcefully defended women’s issues, programs for People With Disability (PWDs), and Free SHS/TVET. He is young, indefatigable, energetic, and full of ideas that both redefine and challenge orthodoxy”.

Hughes further acknowledged that the past few years have been challenging for Ghanaians, with leadership under intense scrutiny.

Despite these challenges, he highlighted Bawumia’s active role in advancing education, energy, health, and infrastructure.

According to Hughes, true leadership is shown through developing and implementing solutions, not by criticizing others, as he claims Mahama does.

The NPP stalwart argued that Bawumia’s ability to address emerging issues sets him apart from Mahama, who dismisses the role of digital transformation in economic progress.

He added that Bawumia is committed to using technology to tackle longstanding issues and empower a youthful, entrepreneurial population through digital solutions. “He is young, indefatigable, energetic, and full of ideas that both redefine and challenge orthodoxy”.
