Okyeame Kwame and David David

Ghanaian rapper, Okyeame Kwame has expressed his admiration for veteran actor, David Dontoh, citing him as a pivotal influence on his cultural identity.

Okyeame Kwame credited David Dontoh as a childhood inspiration for Ghanaian culture and heritage.

“Every time I thought of David Dontoh, I remembered how I idolised him without saying, seeing him in his Fugu, the way he speaks, his philosophy everything was so Ghanaian.”

He aspired to emulate Dontoh’s cultural pride, stating that while growing up, he had always wanted his influence to be of a national fibre, just like David Dontoh.

Kwame also highlighted other factors that drive his passion for representing Ghanaian culture through fashion.

“I always try my best to put on something that is Ghanaian because it’s my identity and stands out, for example, when I go for big events out of Ghana, I have to take Ghana with me.”

He recalled his recent trip to Cape Town for the Earthshot Price Award 2024, hosted by the Prince of Wales, Prince William where his traditional kente attire made a lasting impression. “When he saw me in my kente, he realized, ‘man pass man, you have to represent’,” Kwame indicated.

As the brand ambassador for ‘Made in Ghana’, Okyeame Kwame emphasized his genuine love for the country, unaffected by his desire for recognition. “I love Ghana because it is the right thing to do, and God has given me a voice and a face, and I want to use that to draw out nationalism,” Kwame indicated.

By embracing his Ghanaian heritage, Okyeame Kwame aims to inspire younger generations to take pride in their cultural identity.

David Kwame Dontoh (born 1964), affectionately called Uncle David, ‘Ghanaman’ and ‘Kofi Abranteɛ ‘(Kofi Gentleman), is a veteran Ghanaian actor and television personality who has starred in numerous local and international films, drama, theatre, and other stage productions.

Rap Icon, Okyeame Kwame revealed that his favorite rappers of all time in Ghana are Flowking Stone and EL.

The rapper made this known following a listener’s request to ask him about his preferred rappers.

Despite his own status as one of Ghana’s top rap artists, Okyeame Kwame shared his admiration for Flowking Stone and EL, explaining that their rap skills move him deeply.

“I’m a great rapper myself, but whenever I hear Flowking Stone and EL rap, it shakes me. It moves me,” he said, expressing his genuine respect for their craft.

His comments highlight the profound impact that both artists’ lyrical abilities and performances have had on him. 

Okyeame Kwame also reiterated his admiration for the younger generation of rappers in Ghana, particularly naming Amerado and Lyrical Joe as his top picks.

While he holds Flowking Stone and EL in high regard, Rap Doctor expressed that when it comes to the new wave of MCs, Amerado and Lyrical Joe are the ones who truly stand out.

He praised both Amerado and Lyrical Joe for their strong lyrical abilities, calling them “very conceptual,” with a unique blend of style, skill, cadence, energy, and rhythm.

Okyeame further emphasized that the new generation’s contributions to the rap scene should not be underestimated, particularly highlighting these two artists as ones who have captured his attention and respect.

Flowking Stone and EL have established themselves as two of the most influential figures in Ghana’s rap scene, known for their creativity, versatility, and lyrical prowess.

Okyeame Kwame’s acknowledgment of their talent emphasizes the mutual respect that exists within the Ghanaian music industry. 

Even as an accomplished artist himself, he remains inspired by the work of his peers, showing that in the music world, appreciation for fellow artists is just as important as individual success.
