Richard Ahiagbah, ECG, Missing Containers

Richard Ahiagbah, NPP Director of Communications

The Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah, has questioned the Mahama administration’s handling of the missing containers belonging to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

He warned that the politicisation of the matter could derail efforts to recover significant state assets and strongly pushed back against claims of misconduct over the missing containers.

“These are very present objects that cannot just disappear because somebody wants it to disappear. There are trails to its movement. It can be tracked”

Richard Ahiagbah, NPP Director of Communications

He insisted that the matter has been sensationalised for political gain, pointing out that the containers have traceable movement records.

He underscored the need for “sober and honest” deliberations to determine the true sequence of events leading to the containers’ disappearance.

While expressing concern about the political framing of the issue, he noted that the matter should not devolve into a blame game, but rather be treated as an administrative process.

“We can pursue the trail as to where these containers are, where they have gone to, who moved them.

“Those are easily accessible matters that we can look at through the administrative processes and the ports, ECG itself, and national security”

Richard Ahiagbah, NPP Director of Communications

Ahiagbah labeled the current reaction as “premature” and a politically motivated “witch hunt”, suggesting it is a hasty attempt to indict the previous administration.

GRA Must Answer, ECG Must Clarify

He pointed to the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) as a key institution that should provide answers regarding the handling of the containers.

“There are processes to either seek to auction them, which we have seen letters from the former MD trying to stop.

“Some of the containers that we’re finding at Kpong and other places in the Northern region or so could be containers resulting from that auction”

Richard Ahiagbah, NPP Director of Communications

According to him, many of the containers had been at the port for an extended period, raising procedural questions about whether some of them had been auctioned.

While he acknowledged uncertainty over whether the auction was officially halted or continued, Ahiagba stressed the need to remove speculation and re-establish clarity.

He called for an independent and objective effort to determine the facts.

“Let’s come to the process, or the conversation with clean hands and say that we want to find these containers.

“They cannot be missing, they cannot be missing by any stretch of the imagination”

Richard Ahiagbah, NPP Director of Communications

According to Ahiagba, the containers are worth approximately $490 million, a figure he described as far too significant to be ignored.

He urged the Energy Minister to focus on tracing the containers before resorting to prosecution.

Support to Coastal Communities

Shifting attention to the plight of vulnerable communities in Ghana’s coastal belt, Ahiagba appealed to President John Dramani Mahama’s government to urgently assist residents of Salakope, Amutsinu, and Agavedzi, where tidal waves continue to displace families and destroy property.

“These are a group of people who have been faithful to the NDC, would vote for the NDC any day, but the NDC always fails to take good care of them”

Richard Ahiagbah, NPP Director of Communications

He noted that despite budgetary allocations for their relief, the government has failed to implement real interventions that would provide stability and long-term safety.

“Now with the appropriation in place, I think the government should begin to provide the needed support for the good people of these communities”

Richard Ahiagbah, NPP Director of Communications

In addition to the coastal regions, Ahiagba called for urgent support for victims of the recent fire at Adum Market.

“I think that they also need urgent support from the government, to keep their livelihoods, or to get their livelihoods back on track”

Richard Ahiagbah, NPP Director of Communications

He described the economic impact of the blaze as devastating, warning that without government intervention, livelihoods would be lost and poverty would deepen among traders.

Setting Politics Aside

Throughout his remarks, Ahiagba returned to a consistent theme: the need for Ghanaian leadership to prioritise fairness, process, and service delivery above political expediency.

On the matter of the ECG containers, he insisted that establishing the truth must precede prosecution.

“Let’s open up the process and let’s get the committee to redo this work or get the former MD to speak to it.

“From there, we can establish the facts of the matter and find these containers, to help ECG continue its service to Ghanaians”

Richard Ahiagbah, NPP Director of Communications
