Ghana is witnessing a deeply emotional and symbolic national event tonight as thousands of fans, loved ones, and fellow musicians converge at Independence Square in Accra for a candlelight vigil in honour of the late legendary highlife icon, Charles Kwadwo Fosu, popularly known as Daddy Lumba.
The solemn event is part of a broader programme to honour the life and legacy of a man whose music not only shaped Ghana’s highlife soundscape but also touched millions across the globe.
The vigil at Independence Square — Ghana’s most symbolic national space — features live musical performances, spoken word tributes, and personal reflections from close collaborators, family members, and dignitaries. Attendees light candles in memory of Daddy Lumba, creating a sea of lights meant to symbolise the eternal flame of his legacy.
According to the organisers, the event is intended to be more than a moment of mourning; it will serve as a celebration of Lumba’s indelible contribution to Ghanaian culture and identity. “Tonight is not just about tears and sorrow — it’s about celebrating a man who gave his soul to music and to this country. Daddy Lumba sang about love, struggle, spirituality, and joy. His voice lives on,” said a spokesperson from the Creative Arts Agency.
The vigil follows a week of national mourning after news broke on Friday, July 26, 2025, that Daddy Lumba had passed away peacefully at the Bank Hospital in Accra following a short illness. He was 60 years old.
Since then, tributes have poured in from across the country and abroad. Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, ministers, musicians, and fans from every region of Ghana have expressed their condolences.
The New Patriotic Party (NPP), of which Lumba was a staunch supporter, released a statement lauding his lifelong impact on both music and the sociopolitical landscape.
In the wake of his passing, the Fosu family opened a Book of Condolence at his residence on Kinshasha Crescent, accessible to the public from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. daily. Hundreds of admirers have since lined up to sign the book and pay their respects.
Daddy Lumba’s Lasting Influence
Daddy Lumba’s musical catalogue spans over three decades and includes timeless hits such as “Aben Wo Ha,” “Theresa,” “Sika Asem,” and “Yentie Obiaa.” His music touched on social commentary, love, personal struggle, and Ghanaian pride, making him a household name.
His posthumous influence has been immediate and profound. Within days of his death, 30 of his songs entered Apple Music Ghana’s Top 100 chart, with his classic hit “Makra Mo” shooting to the number one spot. This resurgence has reminded many of the power and poetry of his work and how deeply it resonates even today.
Veteran musician and close friend Nana Acheampong, who collaborated with Lumba in the famed Lumba Brothers duo, said: “Lumba was not just a singer. He was a movement. His music carried messages that generations will live by.”
The candlelight vigil in Accra is also being mirrored by simultaneous events in diaspora communities, including in London, New York, Amsterdam, and Düsseldorf — cities with significant Ghanaian populations.
These coordinated tributes speak volumes about Lumba’s cross-border impact and how his music united Ghanaians beyond geography.
Meanwhile, social media continues to flood with tributes, memories, and song covers from fans around the world. TikTok, Instagram, and X (formerly Twitter) have all seen a spike in Daddy Lumba-related content, further immortalising him in the digital age.
While funeral arrangements have not yet been formally announced, the family has indicated that a full state-assisted burial is being discussed with the government.
Cultural groups, musical associations, and traditional leaders are also lobbying for a permanent memorial, such as naming a national music auditorium after him or erecting a statue at Independence Square.
Tonight’s vigil is to serve not only as a farewell but as the beginning of a collective effort to immortalise Daddy Lumba’s legacy for generations to come.
As the sun sets over Independence Square and the flames of remembrance are lit, Ghana will once again rise in harmony, united by music, memory, and the enduring spirit of a legend whose voice will never be forgotten.
