The organisers of the Ghana Energy Awards (GEA) have announced the postponement of the Media Launch and Opening of Nominations for the 9th edition of the prestigious awards ceremony, citing national mourning over the recent tragic loss of senior statesmen and soldiers in a helicopter crash.
Speaking on behalf of the Awarding Panel, Chairman Kwame Jantuah, Esq. expressed the deep sorrow felt by the organisers and the wider energy community over the national tragedy.
“Ghana stands united in grief following the tragic loss of distinguished statesmen and gallant soldiers in the recent horrific helicopter crash.
“Our deepest condolences go out to the families, loved ones, and colleagues of these national heroes.”

The event, which was originally scheduled for Tuesday, August 12, 2025, will now be held at a later date yet to be announced.
The decision, according to the GEA, was reached after extensive consultations with stakeholders and partners, and reflects the organisation’s commitment to stand in solidarity with the nation during this period of grief.
Mr. Jantuah explained that the decision to postpone the launch was not merely procedural but a moral responsibility to honour the memory of those who had given so much in service to the country.

The helicopter crash, which claimed the lives of eight prominent figures, has plunged the nation into mourning, prompting the Government to declare a three-day National Mourning period.
The programme of remembrance includes the opening of Books of Condolence and an inter-denominational state funeral at the Black Star Square on Friday, August 15, 2025.

In light of these events, the GEA has assured the public that the 9th edition of the awards will proceed at a future date once the period of mourning has passed.
The Ghana Energy Awards, established to celebrate excellence and innovation in Ghana’s energy sector, has over the years become a key platform for recognising industry achievements and promoting sustainable energy practices.
While the postponement may delay this year’s nominations process, the organisers believe the gesture underscores the values of unity, respect, and national solidarity that underpin the awards’ vision.
The Chairman of the Awarding Panel urged stakeholders, partners, and the public to use this time to reflect on the contributions of the deceased to Ghana’s progress.

According to the GEA secretariat, the new date for the Media Launch and Opening of Nominations will be communicated in due course, with the assurance that the awards’ objectives and commitment to transparency will remain unchanged.

For the organisers, the postponement reflects the conviction that national unity must always take precedence over celebrations, no matter how significant.
