Ursula Owusu-Ekuful Declares Bid to Lead NPP’s Renewal Drive as General Secretary

Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, Former Communications Minister

Former Communications Minister Ursula Owusu-Ekuful has officially declared her intention to contest the General Secretary position of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), pledging to lead a united reorganisation process to return the party to power in the 2028 elections.

The announcement, made on her birthday via a Facebook post on October 20, marks her first major political move since the NPP’s electoral defeat in 2024. In her message titled “Dearest Patriots,” Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful acknowledged the NPP’s internal challenges and called on members to embrace renewal through unity, discipline, and reflection.

She described the party’s current condition as a necessary moment of introspection and rebuilding after what she called a “stormy face-off” among its ranks.

“We came out bruised, our individual and collective egos battered. We lie not in a good place. However, as our great tradition had demonstrated over the years, influenced by the then burgeoning spirit of resilience and purpose that heralded our birth in Saltpond, we will thrive”

Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, Former Communications Minister

Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful’s declaration comes amid internal agitation within the NPP over leadership renewal following the 2024 loss to the National Democratic Congress (NDC). The former Ablekuma West legislator, known for her firm stance and organisational drive, positioned herself as a unifying figure capable of reviving the party’s grassroots energy.

The former minister’s message reflected a call to reconnect the NPP with its base and rebuild confidence across all levels of party structure. She underscored that the path to power in 2028 would depend on restoring trust and coherence from polling stations through to the electoral areas, constituencies, and regions to the national executive.

“That is the only dose we need to boot out this accident-of-a-government,” she stated.

Her campaign message also challenged what she termed the “caretaker NDC government,” which she accused of deceiving Ghanaians into office through false promises which led to waning the people’s belief in the NPP government.

“But we will revive it,” she said, arguing that the NPP must take responsibility for restoring national confidence in its capacity to deliver development and good governance.

Prepared for Unity and Renewal

In what appeared to be a declaration of her readiness to serve, Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful presented herself as a tested and prepared leader determined to guide the party through its reorganisation process.

She described the next electoral cycle as a rescue mission – one that required collective resolve and renewed belief in the NPP’s founding ideals.

“On this day of my birth, Patriots, I come before you, the fighter you have always known… nurtured, proven, and prepared, over the years, to join you on this collective journey to rescue our beloved country from this clueless, insensitive, and glaringly incompetent government”

Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful’s statement also emphasised her commitment to inclusion. She appealed to both local and diaspora members of the NPP to rally behind a unified mission of recovery, describing the NPP as a family that must rise from internal setbacks to meet the aspirations of Ghanaians who still looked to the party for progress and reform.

As part of her appeal, she urged party supporters to approach the upcoming leadership contest with purpose rather than division. She reiterated that unity and faith were essential to the NPP’s revival, expressing confidence that the party’s strength lay in its resilience and capacity for self-correction.

“Let us commit to the struggle, for I know with unity and God on our side, as well as the collective will of the Ghanaian people, we shall overcome,” she concluded.

Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful’s entry into the General Secretary race introduces another seasoned political figure into the NPP’s ongoing leadership reconfiguration.

Other General Secretary hopefuls of the NPP currently include current General Secretary Mr. Justin Frimpong Kodua, former Member of Parliament (MP) for Subin Mr. Eugene Boakye Antwi, NPP National Treasurer Dr. Charles Dwamena, and former Bortianor-Ngleshie Amanfro MP Mr. Sylvester Tetteh.

Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful’s declaration signals a broader conversation within the party about generational renewal, strategic reorganisation, and its role as Ghana’s main opposition force in Ghana’s prevailing political climate.
