Ghana’s President HE John Dramani Mahama spent his 67th birthday not at a political event or private celebration, but in the company of children on hospital admission—an experience he described as his most meaningful way to commemorate the day.
The President, who turned 67 on November 29, visited the children’s wards of the LEKMA Hospital and the Maamobi Polyclinic together with his wife, First Lady Lordina Mahama. The gesture, according to him, was inspired by a desire to place the country’s young citizens at the centre of Ghana’s development agenda.
In a message shared after the visits, President Mahama expressed profound gratitude to Ghanaians for the outpouring of goodwill, noting the many warm wishes he received from his wife, children, government officials, opposition political figures, religious leaders, civil society actors and citizens across the country.
Born in 1958, just a year after Ghana’s independence, the President emphasised that each birthday offers him a moment of reflection about the nation’s journey and the responsibility of leadership.
“Thank you all for the best wishes, prayers, your birthday greetings and cards, and the lovely flowers from Lordina and many Ghanaians,” he wrote. He added that the decision to spend the day with the children was intentional and deeply symbolic.
During the visit, the President and Lordina Mahama interacted with parents and children in the wards, offering them words of encouragement while presenting assorted items and a token of support to the families.

He described their dedication as indispensable to the well-being of children and families who depend on public healthcare. “…You are the ones who make the real difference in the lives of these children and their families,” he added.
The LEKMA Hospital and Maamobi Polyclinic, both located within the Greater Accra Region, serve some of the most densely populated communities in the capital.
Staff at the two facilities have, over the years, grappled with high patient loads and limited resources, but their commitment to service has been widely recognised by health authorities and citizens alike. The President’s visit is therefore seen as a morale boost to the medical teams whose daily efforts often go unnoticed.
