Atlético Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain have booked their places in the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League after dramatic and dominant performances against FC Barcelona and Liverpool FC respectively.

At the Wanda Metropolitano, Atlético Madrid were pushed to the edge but ultimately showed resilience to edge past Barcelona 3-2 on aggregate, despite losing 2-1 on the night.

The visitors stunned the home side almost immediately when teenage sensation Lamine Yamal opened the scoring in just the fourth minute, capitalizing on a defensive lapse to give Barcelona an early foothold in the contest.

That early strike shifted momentum instantly, and by the 24th minute, Barcelona had drawn level on aggregate thanks to a composed finish from Ferran Torres, making it 2-0 on the night.

At that point, Atlético looked rattled. Barcelona were moving the ball with confidence, pressing high, and threatening to completely overturn the tie. But this Atlético side, shaped by grit and tactical discipline, refused to collapse under pressure.

The turning point came when Ademola Lookman pulled one back for the hosts in the 31st minute. His goal not only reignited the crowd but restored Atlético’s aggregate advantage, forcing Barcelona to chase the game once more.

Barcelona continued to press for a third goal, but they were repeatedly denied by an inspired performance from goalkeeper Juan Musso, whose reflex saves kept Atléti alive during critical moments.

His composure under pressure proved telling in preserving the aggregate lead.

The Catalan side’s task became even more difficult when defender Eric García was sent off following a last-man challenge on Alexander Sørloth. Initially shown a yellow card, the decision was upgraded to a red after VAR intervened, leaving the Blaugrana with ten men for the closing stages.

Despite their numerical disadvantage, Barcelona managed to see out a 2-1 win on the night, but it wasn’t enough. Atlético Madrid progressed 3-2 on aggregate, marking their first return to the Champions League semi-finals since 2017, ironically, the last time they also eliminated Barcelona at this stage.

After the game Diego Simeone was elated that his side still remains in the competition. ” It’s been 14 years now. Seeing the team still competing excites me,” said Atletico gaffer Simeone.

He also added that despite several players coming and leaving, he has finally been able to steer the team this far.

“The players have changed, we’ve started over countless times, and we’re back among the top four in Europe.
Playing in a Champions League semi-final, how wonderful. We’ll go there with all our enthusiasm and faith. We know our strengths and weaknesses. We’re ready. We’ll go there to find what we’ve been searching for for so many years.”

Now, Simeone’s side will turn their attention to a potential clash with either Arsenal FC or Sporting CP as they continue their pursuit of a long-awaited European crown.

PSG too Strong for Liverpool

While Atlético had to dig deep, Paris Saint-Germain delivered a statement performance at Anfield, defeating Liverpool 2-0 on the night to complete a commanding 4-0 aggregate victory.

Facing one of Europe’s most intimidating atmospheres, PSG showed no signs of nerves. Instead, they controlled the tempo of the game and executed their plan with precision.

The breakthrough came in the second half, and it was Ousmane Dembélé who took center stage.
The French winger scored twice, showcasing both his pace and clinical finishing to silence the fans at Anfield.

His brace not only secured victory on the night but underlined PSG’s growing maturity in high-pressure European fixtures.
Liverpool, known for their comebacks on this stage, struggled to break down a well-organized PSG defense. Despite flashes of attacking intent, they lacked the cutting edge needed to overturn the deficit.

Liverpool head coach Arne Slot expressed disappointment over their elimination but insisted that the game could have gone either ways especially in the second half.

“Of course we are very disappointed because I think there were parts of the second half where you could feel if we could just score now, this could become a very special night.”

Under the guidance of Luis Enrique, PSG have evolved into a more balanced and disciplined unit. Their back-to-back elimination of Liverpool, including another triumph at Anfield, signal a team that has learned from past disappointments and is now firmly focused on sustained European success.

PSG now await the winner of the quarter-final clash between FC Bayern Munich and Real Madrid CF, with Bayern currently holding a narrow 2-1 advantage heading into the second leg.

Having lifted their first Champions League title last season in emphatic fashion, thrashing Inter Milan 5-0 in the final, the largest winning margin in recent UCL final history, the French champions are now aiming to cement their dominance by going back-to-back.
