Ghanaian dancers and co-founders of the DWP dance academy, Dancegod Lloyd and Afrobeast have disclosed that they were compelled to sleep at Tema station in Accra central because they didn’t have money to go home.

Speaking in an interview, the dancers shared one of their worst experiences being in the entertainment industry. Afrobeast recounted that he and Dancegod had been called for a video shoot however, they didn’t get their pay after the shoot and that led them to sleep at Tema station.

“We went for a gig and it took the whole day. We closed at dawn and the people commended us and they told us that they will later send our money to us. At that point in time, we didn’t have any money on us and we decided to walk from James town to Tema station. When we got there, I just told Dancegod Lloyd that no matter what we do we can’t get home. So, we just took off our shirts found a table, and slept at Tema station”

Danegod and Afrobeast venture into music

It is worth noting that the dancers have made several strides in the entertainment industry and now they have ventured into recording songs.  Speaking in the interview, they disclosed why they have decided to venture into music besides their dancing career.

They revealed that they mostly have their content pulled down from most social media platforms due to copyright issues, because they dance to other artist’s songs . They were also quick to note that doing their music doesn’t mean they are not going to dance to other artist’s songs.

“Clearly, we are just dancing to someone’s song and when we put it out there on Instagram and Facebook or YouTube the copyright thing takes the video down after a day or two. And we don’t get to put out the content we want out there. So, we decided that since we are on a journey to create something big, let’s just start doing our music. But that doesn’t mean we are going to stop dancing to other people’s music but this is for us and the future generation”.

Dancegod and DWP in Beyonce’s music video

Dancegod Llyod and his dance academy, DWP, had the opportunity to feature in Beyonce and Shatta Wale’s hit song ‘Already’.  Speaking about how they landed the deal, Dancegod recounted that he was contacted by some people from abroad and they decided on how the choreography was going to pan out. Afrobeast also noted that the video which was shot in Nima took only one take for it to be complete.

“It was very peaceful, working with them was very easy. We were contacted by people from the states but those that shoot the video;are Ghanaians and it was just one take. The choreography was put together by Jackallnight and Papi Ojo. But they wanted the Ghanaian vibe to the dance and that’s what we did. So, we all came together to put it together.”

According to the dancers, it took a whole year after shooting the video before it was released. They stated that they nearly lost hope since they thought the video release had been canceled due to the pandemic. They also disclosed that they couldn’t speak about it because they were;under a contract to keep mute about the music video. However, the music video was finally released.

DWP, first dance crew to collaborate with an artist

That notwithstanding, their dance academy in 2020 had the opportunity;to become the first dance crew in Ghana to collaborate with a recording artist. The dance academy collaborated with the sensational singer, Becca for a song titled ‘No one’.

“I got a message from Becca’s team and they wanted to use the team. So, we had a meeting and we brought our thoughts together and decided on collaborating with her. It was a huge deal for me because that was the first;time a dance team has collaborated with an artist”.
