Ghana Cricket Association pays a courtesy call on the Minister for Sports and Recreation, Hon. Kofi Adams

Ghana’s Minister for Sports and Recreation, Hon. Kofi Adams, has called on the national cricket team to stay focused as they pursue qualification for next year’s World Cricket Tournament, describing the opportunity as a moment that could define a major milestone in the country’s sporting history.

According to the Minister, securing a place at the global event would not only elevate the profile of cricket in Ghana but also serve as a fitting achievement to mark the nation’s upcoming 70th anniversary celebrations next year.

His remarks come at a time when attention is gradually shifting toward lesser-followed sports that hold potential for international recognition. The charge was delivered when officials of the Ghana Cricket Association paid a courtesy call on the Minister at the Ministry.

The meeting formed part of ongoing engagements aimed at strengthening collaboration between the government and sporting bodies. Led by Ghana Cricket Association (GCA) President Emmanuel Owusu-Ansah Asare, the delegation used the visit to brief the Minister on recent developments within the sport, including Ghana’s performance in a tournament they hosted, as well as broader plans to expand cricket across the country.

Building Momentum For World Cup Qualification

During the engagement, the association presented a report on the recently held tournament, outlining both successes and areas that require support. They also took the opportunity to showcase the trophy won by the national team, a symbol of progress that has fueled optimism within the cricket community.

The delegation expressed appreciation for the Ministry’s backing, noting that such support has been “instrumental in sustaining growth.” At the same time, they reaffirmed their ambition to secure “qualification for the World Cricket Tournament”, a target they believe is within reach with the right structures and “continued investment.”

Responding to the presentation, Adams acknowledged the strides made by the team and its leadership, commending both the technical and administrative arms of the association for their dedication. “Your determination and focus demonstrate your commitment,” he said, emphasizing that consistency and discipline would be crucial in the months ahead.

He further stressed that government remains committed to ensuring that all sporting disciplines receive attention, not just football, which has traditionally dominated the national conversation.

In his view, cricket represents an untapped avenue capable of inspiring a new generation of athletes. Beyond performance on the field, the Minister highlighted the broader impact of sports development, pointing to cricket’s potential to foster unity and provide opportunities for young people across the country.

He reiterated assurances that the Ministry would continue to explore ways of supporting the association as it works toward its “international ambitions.” Hon. Kofi Adams also extended gratitude to the Local Organizing Committee for successfully delivering the recent tournament within a limited timeframe, describing the effort as “evidence of what can be achieved with proper coordination and commitment.”

The visit was more than a ceremonial engagement. It was a strategic step in aligning the GCA’s goals with national priorities, particularly as they intensify preparations for qualification.

With momentum building and institutional backing gradually strengthening, the focus now shifts to execution. The path to the World Cricket Tournament will demand more than optimism; it will require sustained performance, investment in grassroots development.
