Nana Boakye, the NPP National Organiser, has questioned recent arrests linked to public commentary and political expression in the country. He argued that the developments pointed to what he described as a troubling pattern of state conduct under the current administration.
In his view, the handling of several arrest cases suggested a coordinated attempt to restrict free expression and has raised serious national concern.
The politician cited the arrest of individuals who allegedly made social media posts critical of government officials. According to him, such actions escalated into security operations involving heavily armed personnel.
He further described an incident involving David Essandoh, a political commentator, whose arrest in his account, involved masked security officers. The NPP National Organiser suggested that the operation created fear and confusion for the family of the individual involved.
He explained that multiple security agencies initially distanced themselves from knowledge of the arrest. According to him, this situation raised questions about coordination among national security institutions.
“Why is the president superintending over such ill matter? I don’t just get it. There are so many important matters, so many issues going on in this country, and yet attention is focused on harassing and politically intimidating opponents?”

He linked the development to what he described as an emerging culture of intimidation against dissenting voices. He added that political expression has now become subject to enforcement actions.
The NPP National Organiser argued that such incidents could undermine public trust in democratic governance. He stated that citizens must retain the freedom to express political opinions without fear of arrest.
Nana Boakye also referred to earlier political statements made by members of the current governing administration. According to him, similar criticisms and strong language had previously been used by the current government when in opposition without resulting in arrests.
“I recall that after the 2020 presidential election petition, the press conference by the then opposition leader, now President, was quite bizarre. It involved attacks and insults directed at the judiciary. That position later became a campaign message for the NDC. On several platforms, they referred to judges as ‘NPP judges’. Indeed, the President himself, at the NDC Lawyers’ Conference, said he would overhaul the judiciary, describing it as full of NPP lawyers and NPP judges.”

He questioned what he described as inconsistencies in the application of law across different political eras. He stated that comparisons with past administrations revealed even more severe public commentary on the part of the current ruling party.
Legal Interpretation, Judicial Decisions And Party Exchanges Influence Discourse
Nana Boakye expanded his argument by drawing comparisons between current arrest cases and past political situations. He stated that similar expressions during previous administrations had not always resulted in severe detention.
The NPP National Organiser cited examples involving alleged threats or provocative political remarks made during the NPP administration. According to him, those cases were handled in ways that did not involve prolonged detention.
He further asserted that some judicial officers appear to act in ways that aligned with political interests in handling free speech-related cases. He suggested that certain court decisions demonstrate inconsistencies in the application of the law.
The politician cited what he described as irregularities in rulings delivered in Court 9, where he claimed equal application of justice had been undermined. He referenced a case in which a remand decision was made despite no application before the court and no objection from the prosecution.
“And Abronye was arrested and granted bail, and today he appeared in court on the same charges. In court, the judge indicated that he should be remanded into prison custody until the determination of the matter, which, in effect, suggests a conviction before trial.”

Nana Boakye also stated that a previous High Court ruling overturned one of the contested decisions, which he said pointed to procedural concerns in earlier proceedings. According to him, such developments raise questions about judicial neutrality in politically sensitive matters.
He concluded that national stability depended on balanced enforcement and political tolerance. He added that democratic governance requires space for differing political views without selective application of state power.
