Nigerian singer-songwriter Johnny Drille has finally delivered his long-awaited second studio album, Before The Morning Light, marking a triumphant return five years after his 2021 debut project Before We Fall Asleep.
The 14-track album, released under Mavin Records, dropped at midnight to widespread excitement across Nigeria and the African music diaspora.
Born John Ighodaro on July 5, 1990, in Edo State, Nigeria, Drille has carved a unique niche in the Afropop and alternative scene with his emotive vocals, introspective lyrics, and masterful blending of folk, soul, and contemporary African sounds.
The son of a school principal and clergyman, he began singing in church before gaining national attention through the 2013 season of Project Fame West Africa. His breakthrough came in 2015 with a cover of Di’Ja’s “Awww,” which caught the ear of Mavin Records founder Don Jazzy.
Signed to the label in 2017, Drille released his debut single “Wait for Me,” earning a nomination for Best Alternative Song at The Headies.
Over the years, Drille has built a reputation as “the king of feels,” delivering heartfelt ballads that explore love, vulnerability, loss, and hope. His 2021 album Before We Fall Asleep was a critical and commercial success, featuring collaborations with Ayra Starr, Don Jazzy, and others.

Subsequent EPs like Home (2022) and the 2024 joint project Hard Guy Confessions with Don Jazzy further showcased his evolution as a producer and storyteller. Recent singles, including “Angelina” with Fireboy DML, kept fans engaged while he prepared this new body of work.
Before The Morning Light arrives as a more mature and expansive offering. Early listeners describe it as a seamless blend of soul-stirring acoustic textures, rhythmic Afropop grooves, and emotionally charged production.
Drille reportedly produced or co-produced 11 tracks, maintaining the intimate, confessional style that defines his artistry. The title, teased with help from his young daughter Amaris in promotional videos, evokes themes of perseverance, new beginnings, and finding light after darkness -a sentiment that resonates deeply with his personal journey into fatherhood and marriage to music executive Rima Tahini.
The album boasts an impressive lineup of features that bridge generations and genres. Standout collaborations include: Angélique Kidjo on “In Time”, Ayra Starr and Young Jonn on “Colorado”, Fireboy DML on “Angelina”, Tiwa Savage on “Over The Moon”. Additional appearances from Lojay, Nonso Amadi, JERUB, and others.
Tracks like “Blown Away,” with its weeping strings and raw vulnerability, and upbeat cuts such as “I Feel Good” and “No Yawa” highlight Drille’s range.
Producers including Don Jazzy, BlaiseBeatz, and Godwyn (heyGoddy) contribute to a polished yet organic sound that feels both fresh and quintessentially Drille.
In a recent interview tease, Drille described the project as deeply personal.
“This album is about those quiet moments before dawn when hope feels distant but the light is coming”

His loyal fanbase often called one of the most dedicated in the industry has waited patiently, and early streaming numbers suggest strong opening day performance across platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, and Boomplay.
Beyond music, Drille has expanded his footprint with a 2025 UK tour and appearances at major events like the AMVCA and GENTI Festival. His ability to balance artistry with authenticity has earned him awards, including Best Alternative Song at the 2019 Headies for “Finding Efe,” and consistent critical acclaim.
As Before The Morning Light illuminates charts and playlists tonight, it reaffirms Johnny Drille’s position as a vital voice in African music. In an era of viral hits and short attention spans, his commitment to quality songwriting and emotional resonance stands out.
