Serena Williams returns to competitive action after close to four years out

Serena Williams’ long-awaited return to competitive tennis has suffered an early setback after partner Victoria Mboko was forced to withdraw from the doubles event at Queen’s Club following a knee injury.

The American icon and the rising Canadian star had captured attention earlier in the week when they teamed up for a memorable first-round victory.

Their partnership generated significant excitement among fans eager to see Williams back on court after nearly four years away from professional tennis.

However, hopes of a deep run in the tournament were dashed when Mboko sustained an injury during her singles encounter against former world number one Karolina Pliskova. The incident occurred midway through the second set and immediately raised concerns about the teenager’s condition.

Tournament officials later confirmed that Mboko would not be fit enough to continue in the doubles draw, bringing an abrupt end to Williams’ comeback appearance in London.

Injury Ends Promising Partnership

After dropping the opening set, the 19-year-old appeared determined to fight her way back into the contest against the Polish star before the injury struck.

While chasing a ball during a rally, she lost her footing and fell awkwardly to the court. The Canadian immediately grabbed her left knee and cried out in pain, prompting medical attention. Although she attempted to assess the damage, it quickly became evident that continuing would be impossible.

Visibly emotional, Mboko left the court with assistance and later confirmed her withdrawal from doubles competition. The decision means the pair’s scheduled quarter-final clash against fellow Canadian Leylah Fernandez and Germany’s Laura Siegemund will not take place.

As a result, Fernandez and Siegemund advance directly into the semi-finals without having to contest the match in the doubles.

Encouraging Signs from Williams’ Return

Despite the disappointing conclusion to her Queen’s campaign, Williams’ return to the professional circuit provided plenty of reasons for optimism.

The 23-time Grand Slam singles champion had not played a competitive match in almost four years, leading many to wonder how quickly she could rediscover her rhythm. Any doubts were largely answered in her opening doubles match.

Alongside Mboko, Williams produced a composed and confident performance to defeat the tournament’s third-seeded pairing. Her trademark power remained evident throughout the contest, particularly on serve, while her movement and shot-making suggested she had retained much of the quality that made her one of the greatest players in tennis history.

The victory was more than just a positive result. It offered a glimpse of what may still be possible for Williams should she decide to extend her comeback beyond a handful of appearances.

Fans packed into Queen’s Club were treated to flashes of the dominance that defined her legendary career, and the reaction around the tennis world was overwhelmingly positive.

Eyes Already on Berlin and Wimbledon

Fortunately for Williams and her supporters, the story does not end in London.

Reports indicate that the former world number one is expected to continue her comeback next week at the Berlin Open. She is set to partner Czech star Karolina Muchova, one of the leading players on the WTA Tour, in another doubles campaign aimed at building momentum ahead of the summer’s biggest events.

Williams has also openly discussed the possibility of competing at Wimbledon later this month. While doubles remains her immediate focus, she has not completely dismissed the idea of returning to singles competition in the future.

For Mboko, attention will now shift toward recovery and rehabilitation. The teenager has enjoyed a breakthrough season and will hope the injury proves less serious than initially feared.

Although their partnership lasted only one match, Williams and Mboko created one of the most intriguing storylines of the Queen’s tournament. Their victory together showcased a blend of experience and youthful energy that captured the imagination of spectators.

While injury has brought their run to an unfortunate conclusion, Williams’ successful return to the court suggests that this latest chapter of her remarkable career may only be getting started.
