The Students’ Representative Council (SRC) of the University of Cape Coast has issued an urgent and definitive address to the entire student body regarding accommodation fees, moving swiftly after mounting reports of arbitrary price hikes across student residential facilities on campus.

The council said it had become aware of widespread anxieties among students over unexplained increases in rent, prompting leadership to clarify its official position and safeguard the welfare of every student affected.

Council described the situation as worrying and said it was issuing the directive to protect students from unauthorized fee increments while discussions with the appropriate authorities continue.

SRC Rejects Unapproved Hostel Rent Increments

The SRC issued a strict directive regarding private accommodation, declaring that no student should pay any increment on hostel rent under the current circumstances.

According to the council, any rent increase must first pass through the appropriate regulatory process before it can be considered valid.

Students have been urged to remain vigilant and immediately report any hostel management that attempts to increase rent without a proper, official assessment and approval from Rent Control.

The council’s directive effectively places the responsibility for enforcement in the hands of students themselves, encouraging early reporting of any hostel found by passing the official approval process.

Students Told to Ignore Hall Fee Notices

Turning to the university’s traditional halls, the SRC wishes to state categorically that no Traditional Hall Fees have been increased, directly addressing concerns that appear to have spread among students in recent days.

In light of this, all students are explicitly directed to disregard any fee structures or price lists originating from any Hall.

“You are strongly advised not to make any payments,” the council warned, cautioning students against acting on documents it considers unauthorised.

The directive suggests that unofficial fee lists may have been circulating within some halls, prompting the council to intervene before students act on information it does not recognise as legitimate.

The council used the notice to restate its broader commitment to defending students against unfair financial treatment.

Call for Patience and Compliance

Leadership called for absolute cooperation from students in adhering to the directives as the council collectively addresses these management issues, describing the matter as one requiring unity between the SRC and the wider student body.

The SRC indicated that the matter remains unresolved, noting that further updates will be communicated as the leadership engages with the necessary authorities to secure a fair resolution for all.

The statement leaves open the possibility of continued dialogue with Rent Control and other relevant bodies as the council works toward a lasting settlement of the fees dispute.

“The SRC remains unshakeable in its commitment to defending your financial interests and ensuring fair treatment across all residential facilities.”

With the directive now in effect, attention turns to how hostel operators and hall authorities respond, and whether students continue to report attempted rent increases as instructed.

The SRC maintained that no rent increment should be paid without Rent Control approval, and no payment should be made against any fee list not officially sanctioned by the council, as leadership continues to press for a resolution with the relevant authorities.
