The Ghana Grid Company Limited has announced that Ghana’s National Interconnected Transmission System experienced a power system disturbance at approximately 3:11am on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, triggering the simultaneous tripping of several generating plants and interrupting electricity supply across the country.

GRIDCo confirmed in a press statement issued from Tema that it has activated established restoration procedures while investigating the cause of the disruption.

“The Ghana Grid Company Limited wishes to inform the general public that the National Interconnected Transmission System experienced power system disturbance at approximately 3:11 a.m. on Wednesday 29th July 2026.

“The disturbance resulted in the simultaneous tripping of some generating plants across the national power system, leading to interruption of electricity supply”.

Restoration Procedures Activated Immediately

GRIDCo confirmed that its technical teams moved quickly to begin restoring power following the disturbance, working alongside other stakeholders within the power sector to bring the system back online.

“GRIDCo has activated its established system restoration procedures. Our engineers and system operators are working continuously, in close collaboration with power sector stakeholders, to restore power within the shortest time possible without compromising safety”.

Alongside restoration efforts, GRIDCo disclosed that a comprehensive technical investigation has begun to establish exactly what triggered the disturbance, though the company did not provide a specific timeline for when findings from this investigation might be made public.

“At the same time, a comprehensive technical investigation has commenced to determine the precise cause of this system event,” the statement said.

GRIDCo Apologises, Pledges Continued Updates

The company extended an apology to affected customers for the inconvenience caused by the disruption, while reaffirming its commitment to restoring supply safely and communicating further details as the situation develops. The statement was issued by the Corporate Communications Section of GRIDCo.

GRIDCo was incorporated in December 2006 to handle the economic dispatching and transmission of electricity from wholesale suppliers, including Independent Power Producers, to bulk customers and distribution utilities across Ghana and the wider West African region.

The company became fully operational on August 1, 2008, following the transfer of the Transmission System Department and its core staff from the Volta River Authority to GRIDCo.

GRIDCo operates the National Interconnected Transmission System and currently transmits electricity to thirty-three bulk customers and distribution utilities, drawing supply from eleven wholesale suppliers, including the Volta River Authority.

A Disruption With Nationwide Reach

Given GRIDCo’s role as the operator of Ghana’s national transmission backbone, a disturbance of this nature carries the potential to affect electricity supply across multiple regions simultaneously, rather than being confined to a single locality.

The simultaneous tripping of generating plants described in the statement suggests a systemic issue within the interconnected grid, rather than an isolated fault at a single facility, underscoring the scale of the technical challenge facing GRIDCo’s restoration teams.

With restoration efforts already underway and a formal investigation launched to determine the root cause of the disturbance, attention now turns to how quickly GRIDCo can bring the national grid back to full operational capacity.

The company’s commitment to providing further updates suggests that additional details, including the specific cause of the disturbance and a clearer restoration timeline, are expected to follow as the investigation progresses and system operators continue working to stabilise the network.

For businesses and households across Ghana affected by the outage, GRIDCo’s assurance of continuous engineering efforts offers some reassurance, though the full scope and duration of the disruption will likely become clearer as the company releases additional information in the hours and days ahead.
