The Metropolitan Museum of Art and Vogue have announced that the 2027 Met Gala and Costume Institute exhibition will center on British designer John Galliano under the title “John Galliano: Horizons,” a decision that has already sparked significant controversy due to the designer’s well-documented history of antisemitic and racist remarks.

The exhibition, scheduled to open to the public on May 9, 2027, and run through January 9, 2028, marks only the third time the Met has devoted a major Costume Institute show to a living designer, following Yves Saint Laurent in 1983 and Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garçons in 2017. It will examine Galliano’s nearly four-decade career, from his landmark 1984 graduate collection at Central Saint Martins through his tenures at Givenchy, Christian Dior, Maison Margiela, and his eponymous label.

Curator in Charge of the Costume Institute Andrew Bolton described the show as approaching fashion as a form of cartography. “Every Galliano collection begins as a journey among things separated by time, place, or medium,” Bolton said in the announcement. “‘Horizons’ approaches fashion as a form of cartography, mapping not territories but affinities, tensions, and transformations. It traces how images become ideas, ideas become material, and material becomes emotion. Yet a horizon reveals not only what lies before us, but also where we stand.”

The exhibition will be organized into three sections-“Bearings,” “Horizons,” and “Atlas of Transformation”and will feature garments, accessories, sketches, toiles, research books, archival materials, and more. Importantly, organizers have stated that the show will not ignore the darkest chapter of Galliano’s career. The first section will directly address the events of 2010 and 2011, when Galliano, then creative director at Dior, was captured on video and in witness accounts making antisemitic and racist statements in a Paris café.

Those incidents led to his immediate suspension and eventual dismissal from Dior and his own label, followed by a Paris court conviction for public insults based on race, religion, ethnicity, or origin. He received a suspended fine.

Anna Wintour, Global Editorial Director of Vogue and a key figure in the Met Gala, defended the choice. “There is no one more deserving of an exhibition of this scale than John Galliano,” she said. In comments circulating widely, she added that his career is not defined by a single moment-something he will live with for the rest of his life-and that the exhibition will not shy away from the darkness in his past, treating it as part of what has shaped him while grappling with the full arc of his work.

Public Reaction

The announcement has drawn sharp online criticism. Many observers compared the honor to celebrating other deeply flawed historical figures, questioning whether artistic achievement can be cleanly separated from personal conduct, especially amid rising concerns about antisemitism. Supporters counter that Galliano has spent years in recovery from substance abuse, issued apologies, met with Jewish leaders and Holocaust survivors, and rebuilt a career that includes critically acclaimed work at Maison Margiela, from which he departed in 2024.

Recent reports indicate that Wintour, Bolton, and Galliano himself held discussions with rabbis and Jewish community leaders in New York over the past year to address potential concerns.

Galliano rose to prominence in the 1980s and 1990s as one of fashion’s most theatrical and inventive designers. His romantic, historically inspired, and often extravagant collections for Dior in particular redefined modern couture and influenced celebrity style for years. Designers and critics have long praised his technical skill, narrative approach, and ability to blend high culture references with street energy.

After his fall from grace, a gradual return-supported in part by industry figures including Wintour culminated in his transformative years at Maison Margiela, where he produced some of the most talked-about shows of the early 2020s.

The Met’s decision frames the exhibition not as simple celebration or rehabilitation but as an examination of how cultural values, memory, and historical context continually reshape the reception of an artist’s work. “Rather than presenting a conventional narrative of disgrace and redemption, the gallery will examine how memory, experience, cultural values, and historical circumstances continually reshape the reception of a designer’s work,” the museum has stated.

Details about the 2027 Met Gala itself, including co-chairs, the official dress code, and the guest list, have not yet been released. The gala is expected to take place on the first Monday in May 2027, with the exhibition opening shortly afterward.

As fashion’s biggest night prepares to honor one of its most complicated living talents, the conversation around art, accountability, and forgiveness is likely to remain as central as the clothes themselves.
