The Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) witnessed a dramatic surge in trading activity as investors exchanged more than 1.83 million shares in a session marked by sharp gains, heavy losses and renewed market volatility.
A total of 1,832,274 shares, valued at approximately GH¢6.68 million, changed hands at the close of trading. The figures represented a remarkable 77% improvement in both trading volume and turnover compared with the previous trading session on Monday, August 24.
The sharp increase in activity highlights a market experiencing significant investor repositioning as traders respond to changing share prices and evolving expectations across key sectors.
Trading Activity Explodes on GSE
The latest session saw 29 listed equities participate in trading, reflecting relatively broad market activity.
However, the session produced a mixed outcome, with eight stocks recording gains while seven ended in negative territory.
The performance demonstrates the increasingly competitive nature of trading on the local bourse, where strong buying interest in selected counters is occurring alongside significant selling pressure in others.
The surge in turnover could indicate renewed investor appetite for equities, even as the benchmark index continues to experience short-term losses.
With the GSE Composite Index still delivering a substantial year-to-date return, investors appear to be taking advantage of price movements to reposition their portfolios.
Dannex Ayrton Starwin Leads Market Winners
Among the biggest beneficiaries of the trading session was Dannex Ayrton Starwin, which emerged as the day’s strongest gainer.
The company’s share price climbed by 9.35%, closing at GH¢1.52 per share.
The strong performance placed Dannex Ayrton Starwin firmly at the top of the gainers’ table and demonstrated the potential for sharp price movements within individual stocks.
Intravenous Infusions also delivered an impressive performance, gaining 7.14%.
It was followed by Digicut Production & Advertising, which advanced by 5.26%, while Unilever Ghana gained 4.18%.
These gains helped provide some support to the broader market amid pressure on the benchmark index.
Guinness Ghana Suffers Major Blow
While several stocks recorded strong gains, the losing side was dominated by a sharp decline in Guinness Ghana Breweries.
The company suffered a staggering 9.93% decline, closing at GH¢10.70 per share.
The near 10% drop made Guinness Ghana the biggest loser of the session and contributed to the negative tone surrounding the broader market.
Enterprise Group followed with an 8.63% decline, while Trust Bank Gambia dropped by 3.79%.
CalBank also slipped by 1.35%, adding further pressure to the market’s performance.
The contrasting performances between the strongest gainers and biggest losers underline the volatility currently visible across selected GSE counters.
MTN Ghana Dominates Trading Volume
In terms of the number of shares exchanged, MTN Ghana emerged as the most actively traded stock.
The telecommunications giant recorded 408,328 shares changing hands during the session.
Intravenous Infusions followed with 336,685 shares, while CalBank recorded 321,514 shares.
Kasapreko completed the leading group with 169,772 shares traded.
The high activity in these counters suggests that investor attention remains concentrated around a number of major and actively traded stocks.
GSE Composite Index Comes Under Pressure
Despite the surge in trading activity, the benchmark GSE Composite Index (GSE-CI) ended the session lower.
The index declined by 26.51 points, equivalent to 0.18%, to close at 15,021.03 points.
The latest decline extended the index’s short-term weakness, with the GSE-CI recording a 1.22% loss over one week and a 2.34% decline over four weeks.
However, the longer-term picture remains significantly stronger.
The index is still up 71.27% year-to-date, highlighting the remarkable performance of Ghanaian equities despite the recent correction.
The latest movement therefore appears less like a collapse and more like a period of consolidation following substantial gains earlier in the year.
Financial Stocks Also Face Short-Term Pressure
The GSE Financial Stocks Index (GSE-FSI) delivered a different performance from the broader market.
The index increased by 0.41% to reach 7,886.58 points.
Despite the daily improvement, the financial stocks benchmark remains under pressure over longer periods.
It recorded a 1.73% decline over one week and a 4.61% loss over four weeks.
Nevertheless, the index has maintained a powerful 69.71% year-to-date gain, underscoring the strong performance of Ghana’s listed financial stocks since the beginning of the year.
Market Valuation Remains Massive
The total market capitalisation of the Ghana Stock Exchange currently stands at approximately GH¢285 billion, equivalent to about US$25.6 billion.
The size of the market underscores the growing importance of the GSE as an avenue for capital formation and investment.
Although recent trading sessions have shown signs of volatility, the strong year-to-date performance of the major indices continues to provide a significant cushion for investors.
The latest session’s 77% surge in volume and turnover could also signal that investors are becoming increasingly active in responding to price changes.
Investors Watch Next Market Moves
With the GSE Composite Index remaining above the 15,000-point level, attention will now turn to whether the market can regain upward momentum or continue its short-term correction.
The combination of rising trading activity, sharp individual stock movements and strong year-to-date returns suggests that the GSE remains firmly on investors’ radar.
In the intervening time, the market is sending mixed signals. Trading activity is surging, some stocks are recording spectacular gains, while others are suffering heavy losses.
The battle between buyers and sellers appears to be intensifying, setting the stage for potentially significant movements in the sessions ahead.
