The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has confirmed that Carlos Queiroz will remain as Head Coach of the Black Stars after reaching an agreement with the Portuguese tactician on a new coaching mandate.
Queiroz initially signed a short-term contract with the GFA with the specific objective of leading Ghana to its fifth FIFA World Cup participation.
His initial mandate came to an end at the end of July, a few weeks after he guided the Black Stars at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America.
Ghanaian football authorities were impressed by Queiroz’s impact, technical expertise and personality during his time with the national team and opted to retain his services.
The decision comes after reports that the former Real Madrid coach was unconvinced by the terms of the proposed new agreement and appeared set to walk away from the Black Stars job. However, negotiations have now resulted in an agreement that will see Queiroz continue in charge of the national team.
Queiroz led Ghana to the knockout stage of the 2026 World Cup, helping the Black Stars progress beyond the group stage for the first time since the 2010 tournament in South Africa.
Ghana finished third in Group L with four points and qualified for the Round of 32 as one of the best third-placed teams. The Black Stars opened their campaign with a narrow 1-0 victory over Panama, drew 0-0 with England before losing 2-1 to Croatia in their final group game.
Their campaign eventually ended in the Round of 32 following a narrow 1-0 defeat to Colombia.
GFA Confirms New Mandate for Queiroz
In announcing the agreement, the GFA highlighted the coach’s international experience and familiarity with the national team as important factors behind its decision to keep him at the helm.
The association said it had reached an agreement with Queiroz “for his appointment as Head Coach of the Black Stars for the next phase of the team’s programme.”
The GFA further stated that, following discussions with the coach and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, it was agreed that Queiroz would begin a new coaching mandate with the upcoming international window.
The Portuguese tactician will take charge of Ghana’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers which begins later this month. The Black Stars will play away to Cotê d’Ivoire before hosting The Gambia in Accra, all in late September.
The association believes his experience and knowledge of the team will be valuable as Ghana seeks to build on its World Cup campaign and prepare for the AFCON qualifiers.
Queiroz’s World Cup Run Earns Another Opportunity
Queiroz’s first mandate ended with Ghana achieving one of its most significant World Cup milestones in 16 years. Although the Black Stars were eliminated by Colombia in the Round of 32, their qualification from Group L represented an improvement on Ghana’s recent World Cup campaigns.
The GFA said Queiroz’s “extensive international experience, technical expertise and knowledge of the Black Stars” position him strongly to lead the team into its next chapter.
Further details of the new mandate and the Black Stars’ upcoming programme will be announced in due course, with the GFA and Queiroz now turning their attention to building what the association describes as “a successful new phase for Ghana on the international stage.”
