Black Princesses Crash Out of U-20 World Cup After Heavy Defeat to France

FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup: Ghana vs France

Ghana’s Black Princesses have suffered another group-stage exit at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup after a heavy 4-0 defeat to France in their final Group C fixture in the 2026 edition in Poland.

The result ended Ghana’s hopes of making history by reaching the knockout stage of the competition for the first time, extending their unwanted record of failing to progress beyond the group phase in all eight of their appearances at the tournament. The Black Princesses had entered the 2026 edition determined to break that long-standing barrier.

France, however, proved too strong for Charles Sampson’s ladies, particularly after the interval, when they turned a competitive contest into a convincing victory. All four goals came in the second half as the French capitalised on their dominance to secure top spot in Group C.

Clara Bertrand opened the scoring before Justine Rouquet struck twice to take her personal tally at the tournament to four goals. Ornella Graziani completed the rout from the penalty spot as France moved to seven points from their three group matches.

The defeat leaves Ghana bottom of Group C with three points from three matches. The Black Princesses scored three goals and conceded eight across their campaign, finishing with a goal difference of -5.

Ghana’s hopes had been revived after a disappointing opening-day defeat to Ecuador. The Princesses lost 3-0 to the South Americans on September 6 before responding impressively with a 3-1 victory over South Korea four days later.

The victory over South Korea had placed Ghana in contention for a historic qualification, but they needed a positive result against a France side that had already drawn 1-1 with South Korea and beaten Ecuador 3-2.

Instead, France produced the commanding performance when it mattered most. The French attack eventually found a way through Ghana’s defence after the break, with Bertrand and Rouquet doing significant damage before Graziani’s penalty in between completed the scoring.

The result also meant Ghana could not take advantage of the simultaneous Group C fixture between South Korea and Ecuador. South Korea secured second place after defeating Ecuador, leaving Ghana stranded at the bottom of the group.

The outcome is particularly disappointing given the expectations surrounding the team before the tournament. Ghana had arrived in Poland with the ambition of reaching the knockout phase for the first time after making seven previous appearances without achieving that feat.

The Black Princesses had also shown encouraging signs during their preparations. Before the tournament, they defeated Polish side Ślęza Wrocław 4-0 in a warm-up game, with Jacqueline Ntoso, Priscilla Mensah, Ruth Amponsah and Diana Amoako among the scorers.

Another Missed Opportunity For The Black Princesses

Ghana’s latest exit continues one of the most persistent patterns in the history of the country’s participation at the U-20 Women’s World Cup. Despite being regular qualifiers, the Black Princesses have never progressed beyond the group stage.

Their 2026 campaign was part of the 12th edition of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, which is being hosted by Poland from September 5 to 27. The tournament features 24 teams across six groups, with the group winners, runners-up and four best third-placed teams advancing to the knockout phase.

For Sampson and his players, the tournament therefore ends with a mixture of encouragement and frustration. The 3-1 win over South Korea demonstrated the team’s ability to compete at the highest youth level, but the heavy defeat to France exposed the gap Ghana must bridge if the country is to finally move beyond the group stage.

The Black Princesses leave Poland knowing they came close to creating history but ultimately fell short. After eight consecutive appearances, Ghana’s wait for a first-ever knockout-stage appearance at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup continues.
