The NPP Flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has urged all aspirants in the party’s national executive elections to bring their campaigns to an immediate close once delegates finish voting. Speaking at the NPP National Delegates Conference at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi, the Former Vice President of Ghana stressed the need for unity after the internal contest.
Dr Bawumia explained that the election is an internal exercise intended to select officers who would serve the party’s collective objective. He therefore cautioned aspirants and their supporters against allowing competition for national positions to create divisions within the party.

The NPP is electing national officers to guide its organisational activities ahead of the 2028 general election, with delegates from across the country taking part in the process. The Electoral Commission is supervising the exercise, which covers nine national executive positions.
According to the NPP Flagbearer, 47 members have offered themselves for the various positions when he addressed the conference. He commended the aspirants for travelling across the country to engage delegates and present their visions for the party.
“This, however, is just an internal contest to select a few from well-qualified aspirants to serve the collective of our party and ultimate objective of winning back the trust of the people to serve our motherland better. Therefore, when the voting is done today, the contest must also end.”

Dr Bawumia consequently called on successful candidates to reach out to their fellow aspirants after the results are declared. He also assured those who do not secure the positions they seek that their experience and contribution would remain important to the NPP.
In addition, the Former Vice President of Ghana urged delegates to conduct themselves peacefully throughout the voting process. He encouraged members to accept the outcome in good faith and leave Kumasi with the party’s unity intact.
The NPP Flagbearer also used the occasion to recognise outgoing national executives for their service to the party. He expressed particular appreciation to the acting National Chairman, Danquah Smith Butey, for leading the party during what he described as a difficult period.
Furthermore, Dr Bawumia acknowledged National Chairman Stephen Ayensu Ntim and former Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, for their contributions to the party. He also thanked the Ashanti Region for its continued support and described it as one of the pillars that has sustained the NPP through difficult periods.

Focusing on the significance of the conference, Dr Bawumia described the gathering as the beginning of another chapter in the party’s history. He said the leadership election should therefore strengthen the organisation instead of becoming a source of lasting division.
The NPP Flagbearer ultimately called on delegates and aspirants to place the party’s collective interests above the outcome of the individual contests. His appeal was for the election to produce new leadership while preserving the relationships needed for the party’s work ahead.
NPP Reorganisation Already Shaping 2029 Programme
The NPP Flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has disclosed that the party’s preparations for a future return to government are already shaping its proposed 2029 governance programme. The Former Vice President of Ghana explained that the NPP has been using its period in opposition to review its structures, policies and engagement with citizens.
Dr Bawumia noted that the party has undertaken consultations with Ghanaians since December 2024, including engagements with people in markets, farms, offices and tertiary institutions. He added that the exercise also involved listening to grassroots members and examining how the party manages its internal affairs.
The NPP Flagbearer said these engagements produced lessons about party organisation, communication and the treatment of grassroots supporters. According to him, the party has also reassessed its approach to policy development, particularly the need to combine political intentions with careful design and consultation.
“We have learned lessons in how to make policy for government and that good intentions must be matched by careful design and genuine consultation with the people.”

Dr Bawumia explained that the lessons are already influencing the NPP’s reorganisation. He pointed to the restructuring of the party from the polling station level through to the regional structures as evidence of the changes undertaken since the 2024 general election.
Additionally, the NPP Flagbearer disclosed that the party has established several policy committees as part of its preparations for a possible return to government. He said these committees are working alongside engagements with different stakeholder groups to develop ideas for the party’s next governance programme.

The Former Vice President of Ghana stressed that the NPP does not intend to wait until an election campaign begins before considering how it would govern. Instead, he indicated that the policy preparation process is already underway as the party seeks to translate lessons from its period in government into future programmes.
Dr Bawumia also linked the early presidential primary to the party’s broader reorganisation strategy. He recalled that he was elected as the NPP’s presidential candidate at the beginning of 2026 and said the subsequent months have been used to establish policy structures and deepen engagements with stakeholders.
Meanwhile, the NPP Flagbearer described opposition as carrying a responsibility to scrutinise the government in office. He argued that the party must continue asking questions about the administration’s performance while developing its own proposals for governance.
The conference therefore provides a platform for the NPP to complete another stage of its internal restructuring through the election of national officers. The party is electing officers for nine national positions under an exercise supervised by the Electoral Commission, with thousands of delegates participating in Kumasi.
