Bawumia Tells NPP to Dissolve Camps and Unite for 2028 Victory

Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Flagbearer and Leader of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has told the party to dissolve its camps and unite behind a push to win power in 2028. He spoke at the close of the National Delegate Conference in Kumasi, after delegates elected the party’s new national executives in voting that ran from October 3 to 4, 2026.

Dr Bawumia congratulated National Chairman John Boadu and his team, assured the candidates who lost that they have a place in the campaign, and asked members to meet within the week to begin planning. He said the party’s elections, from the polling stations to the national level, are now complete.

Bawumia Marks the End of the Rebuilding Cycle

Dr Bawumia called the conference a success and described it as the culmination of a year spent rebuilding and restructuring the party from the polling station up. He listed the stages the NPP has completed.

Members first elected the flagbearer, then polling station executives, electoral area coordinators, constituency executives, and regional executives. The national executives were the last group to be chosen.

He thanked God for bringing the party this far and congratulated the new officers on behalf of delegates, with Boadu leading the team. He said the officers worked hard and that God had rewarded their efforts. Boadu won the chairmanship with 2,888 votes against 2,408 for Boakye Agyarko, according to the results sheet.

A Party That Wins Together

The flagbearer used the speech to address the candidates who were not elected. He described the NPP as a democratic party where elections bring competition, and he said the contest was never only about who came first. He told those who fell short, “You did not lose.” In his telling, the party as a whole won the election.

He promised every contestant a role. Those who stood will be part of the campaign for 2028, he said, because the party wants everybody involved. “There is enough work for everybody,” he added.

The message echoed a theme from earlier in the conference, when the election committee chairman and Boadu both argued that the contest should leave no losers.

Delegates Have Set the Task

Dr Bawumia reminded the room what delegates expect in return for their votes. They have given the leadership a mandate to bring the party back to power in 2028, he said, and the leadership intends to involve all members in doing so.

He asked for speed. “There is no time to waste,” he said. He wants members to meet in the first week after the conference and start the process of getting to the 2028 election, with strategies put together in the same period.

Unity as the Winning Strategy

The flagbearer put unity at the centre of his plan. “Unity in this party will give us victory,” he said. Elections are over, he told delegates, and the party must return to a single purpose.

His instruction on factions was direct. “All the camps will dissolve,” he said, and the NPP will move as one body toward 2028. The appeal carries weight because several races were tight. John Boadu beat Agyarko by 480 votes.

Mustapha Abdul-Hamid missed the third vice-chairman slot by 31 votes, finishing behind Kojo Fosu Boadu, Henry Nana Boakye and Nana Akomea. Such margins can leave supporters of losing candidates feeling aggrieved, which is the risk Bawumia’s call is aimed at.

A Hard Fight Ahead

Dr Bawumia did not promise an easy road. He told delegates that returning to government would not be a simple election and that taking power demands hard work. He compared the effort required with earlier campaigns, referring to 2000 and 2016, and said this one will demand more.

The NPP lost the 2024 general election, and the flagbearer is asking a party that has just finished a long internal contest to turn its energy outward within days.

The new executives start with a clear first assignment. John Boadu told delegates in his own address that the team will lead through consultation and rebuild from the grassroots. Bawumia’s call for strategy meetings this week gives them an early test of that pledge.

The party now has until the December 2028 election to show that unity declared in Kumasi survives the pressures of campaigning. Dr Bawumia closed by thanking delegates and asking God’s blessing on the NPP and on Ghana.
