Samsung Electronics is riding a powerful wave of artificial intelligence demand, with the global AI boom pushing the South Korean technology giant toward another extraordinary earnings milestone.

The company expects its operating profit for the three months to the end of September to reach 107.4tn won, equivalent to about $80bn, representing a nine-fold increase from the same period a year earlier.

The projected figure would mark Samsung’s fourth consecutive quarter of record earnings, highlighting the extraordinary financial impact of the worldwide race to build AI infrastructure.

AI Demand Turns Memory Chips Into Gold

At the centre of Samsung’s earnings surge is the booming market for memory chips.

AI data centres require enormous quantities of advanced semiconductors to process and store the vast amounts of information needed to train and operate increasingly sophisticated artificial intelligence systems. As technology companies accelerate investment in AI, demand for the chips powering that infrastructure has surged.

Samsung is one of the world’s largest memory chip manufacturers, competing alongside South Korea’s SK Hynix and US-based Micron.

These companies supply critical components to the wider AI ecosystem, including technology firms such as Nvidia, whose processors have become central to the rapid expansion of AI computing.

The resulting demand has transformed the semiconductor industry into one of the biggest beneficiaries of the AI investment boom.

Samsung’s latest earnings forecast offers another indication of just how dramatically the sector has changed.

Record Profits Reflect Semiconductor Frenzy

Samsung’s expected 107.4tn won operating profit represents an enormous jump compared with the same quarter last year.

The company’s preliminary earnings announcement is closely watched by investors because South Korean corporations typically provide forecasts ahead of their full financial results.

Unlike estimates produced by external analysts, these forecasts are based on Samsung’s internal company data, making them particularly important indicators of the company’s financial performance.

The full third-quarter earnings report is expected at the end of October.

Investors will then gain greater insight into how much of the profit surge came from memory chips, smartphones and Samsung’s other businesses.

The semiconductor division, however, is expected to remain the star performer as AI infrastructure spending continues to accelerate globally.

AI Spending Creates A Semiconductor Gold Rush

The financial windfall for Samsung comes against the backdrop of an extraordinary increase in AI investment.

US technology giants including Google, Amazon and Meta have pledged more than $650bn toward AI projects this year. Much of that spending is expected to flow into data centres, advanced computing equipment and the semiconductor supply chain.

That spending spree has created enormous opportunities for chip manufacturers.

Samsung’s stock market valuation crossed $1tn earlier this year, reflecting growing investor confidence in the company’s ability to benefit from the AI-driven semiconductor cycle.

The company is not alone in preparing for years of potentially strong chip demand.

In June, South Korea unveiled plans involving at least $880bn in projects led by Samsung and SK Hynix to expand the country’s chip manufacturing capabilities over the coming years.

Japan, China and Taiwan are also pouring money into semiconductor manufacturing as governments and companies compete for a larger share of the AI economy.

Chip Shortages Are Driving Prices Higher

The surge in demand has also created pressure across the semiconductor supply chain.

Global chip shortages have emerged as companies race to secure the components needed to expand AI computing capacity. Limited supply combined with rapidly rising demand has given manufacturers greater pricing power.

Samsung has been among the companies raising prices as the market tightens.

That development could eventually affect consumers beyond the technology sector. Higher semiconductor prices can increase production costs for smartphones, computers and other electronic devices.

The impact of the AI boom is therefore extending well beyond data centres and technology companies.

Businesses across the electronics industry are having to contend with a semiconductor market that is increasingly shaped by the enormous appetite for AI infrastructure.

Samsung’s Foldable Phones Add Another Boost

While memory chips are driving much of the expected earnings surge, Samsung’s consumer electronics business could also receive support.

The company launched its latest folding smartphones in August, adding another potential source of momentum to its mobile business.

Samsung manufactures the Galaxy Fold range and its Galaxy S26 smartphones, maintaining a significant presence in the fiercely competitive global smartphone market.

The latest foldable devices arrive as manufacturers seek new ways to stimulate demand in a mature smartphone market.

Even so, the scale of Samsung’s projected profit growth underscores the dominant role being played by semiconductors.

AI Boom Reshapes Global Chip Industry

Samsung’s performance illustrates how quickly AI has become a major force in the global technology economy.

The competition is no longer limited to developing better AI models. Companies are racing to build the physical infrastructure required to run them, creating huge demand for processors, memory chips, data centres and advanced manufacturing capacity.

Its projected $80bn operating profit provides a striking measure of how much money is now flowing through the semiconductor industry as AI investment accelerates.

With billions of dollars being committed to new projects across the US and Asia, the chip race could remain intense for years.

Samsung’s full third-quarter results, due later in October, will provide a clearer picture of how deeply the AI boom has reshaped its finances.
