HBO has officially greenlit a television series continuation of the 2018 hit film Crazy Rich Asians, with several key members of the original cast set to reprise their roles. The one-hour drama will pick up after the events of the movie and is scheduled to begin production in 2027.
Constance Wu and Henry Golding will return as series regulars in their roles as Rachel Chu and Nick Young. Ronny Chieng will also star as series regular Edison “Eddie” Cheng, while Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh is attached in a recurring capacity as Eleanor Young. The announcement was accompanied by a teaser that incorporated footage from the original film.

Adele Lim, who co-wrote the 2018 screenplay, will serve as showrunner and executive producer. She is joined by original director Jon M. Chu, author Kevin Kwan, and producers Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson as executive producers. The series is a co-production between HBO and Warner Bros. Television.
Lim described the project as a long-awaited sequel that expands beyond a single film. “This series is the sequel we’ve been waiting for, but instead of just one movie, we get eight episodes to delve into the characters and worlds of Kevin Kwan’s brilliant books,” she said. “Our writers room is humming and we can’t wait to share what we’ve come up with.”
About Crazy Rich Asians
The original Crazy Rich Asians, directed by Jon M. Chu and based on Kevin Kwan’s bestselling novel, became a cultural and commercial landmark. Released in 2018, it grossed nearly $240 million worldwide and stood as the highest-grossing Hollywood studio romantic comedy at the North American box office in nearly a decade.
The film was widely noted for its predominantly Asian cast and its depiction of Singapore’s ultra-wealthy elite.
Chu reflected on the film’s impact in a statement. “Eight years ago, Crazy Rich Asians changed my life, and I got to make it with the most creative and hilarious group of people I’ve ever known,” he said. He added that he could finally answer the frequent question about a sequel: “Well… bok bok bitch, we’re back.”
Casey Bloys, co-chair and chief content officer of Skydance Direct-To-Consumer, expressed enthusiasm for the project. “We are so excited that Adele and the team behind the history-making film are bringing the next chapter of this story to life. Constance, Henry, Ronny, and Michelle are global superstars, and we know the passionate fans of the film and megahit novels can’t wait to see more.”
The series will draw from Kwan’s book trilogy, which includes the original Crazy Rich Asians as well as the sequels China Rich Girlfriend and Rich People Problems. While specific plot details remain under wraps, the television format is expected to allow deeper exploration of the characters and the opulent, high-society world introduced in the film.
A feature film sequel had been discussed for years but never materialised. Development on a television adaptation began earlier, with a writers’ room commissioned in 2025. The formal series order moves the project forward under the HBO banner.
The announcement arrives at a moment of significant corporate change, following the completed merger involving Warner Bros. Discovery. The project represents one of the first major series greenlights under the new structure.
Fans of the original film have long anticipated further stories involving Rachel, Nick and the Young family. The return of the central romantic leads alongside Yeoh’s formidable Eleanor and Chieng’s comic presence as Eddie is expected to anchor the series in familiar character dynamics while expanding the narrative across eight episodes.

Production is slated to start in 2027, with no specific premiere window yet announced. As the creative team continues work in the writers’ room, further casting announcements and additional details about the storyline are anticipated in the coming months.
The series positions Crazy Rich Asians as an ongoing franchise rather than a standalone film, offering audiences an extended stay in the lavish, complicated world of Singapore’s wealthiest families. With the original creative voices and several of the key performers returning, the project aims to satisfy long-standing demand for a continuation while taking advantage of the broader canvas that television provides.
