Federal agents have searched the home of Democratic Congresswoman Ilhan Omar, prompting criticism from senior Democrats and renewed scrutiny of the Trump administration’s treatment of the Minnesota lawmaker less than a month before the US midterm elections.
The US Justice Department confirmed that agents from Homeland Security Investigations executed a judicially authorised search warrant in the Washington, D.C., area on Monday as part of an ongoing federal criminal investigation. However, the department did not disclose the nature or scope of the inquiry.
The search has raised questions about its timing, particularly because Omar is seeking re-election in November and the Justice Department has historically sought to avoid overt investigative actions involving political candidates in the 60 days before a primary or general election.

The investigation’s precise focus remains unclear. However, senior Trump administration officials have previously referred publicly to an inquiry involving Omar, whose immigrant background and progressive political positions have made her a frequent target of Republican criticism.
Senior Democratic leaders in the House condemned the operation, linking it to years of attacks against Omar by President Donald Trump and his political allies.
“For years, Donald Trump and far-right extremists have relentlessly targeted Congresswoman Omar with vile personal attacks and baseless accusations.
“Now, less than 30 days until the midterm election, his violent mass deportation machine has descended upon the home of a duly elected Member of Congress and her family.”
House Democratic leaders
The search comes during the final weeks of Omar’s re-election campaign, with the November midterms set to determine which party controls the House of Representatives and the Senate.

Although authorities have confirmed that the search forms part of a federal criminal investigation, the timing has nevertheless prompted concerns among Democrats about the potential political implications of the investigation.
Trump has repeatedly criticised Omar at public events, including a rally in Tennessee over the weekend, where he attacked her upbringing and suggested that Vice President JD Vance and others were investigating her.
Vance has previously accused Omar of immigration fraud, an allegation she has denied. He has also said he and a senior White House official were examining how to investigate her.

Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin said last month that an investigation was ongoing and involved questions about whether Omar had lied on immigration forms. He added that “something’s going to happen.”
Omar’s office has previously rejected Vance’s allegations. In March, her chief of staff, Connor McNutt, described the claims as fabricated and defamatory. “This is rich coming from someone who literally said they were willing to ‘create stories’ to redirect the media,” McNutt said in a statement at the time.
He also accused Vance of seeking to distract attention from other administration controversies, including the war, rising fuel prices and declining polling numbers.
Omar’s Political Background Under Scrutiny
Omar, who was first elected to Congress in 2018, represents Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District, which includes Minneapolis. She is a member of the progressive group known as “The Squad” and was among the first two Muslim-American women elected to the House. She was also the first African refugee elected to Congress.
Her political career has repeatedly drawn criticism from Trump and Republican lawmakers, particularly over her progressive views, immigration background and comments on Israel.
When Republicans took control of the House in 2023, they voted to remove Omar from the House Foreign Affairs Committee, citing her remarks about Israel.
Questions about her personal history also predate her election to Congress. Republicans have repeatedly raised allegations concerning her marriage and immigration status, including claims that she married her brother. Omar has broadly rejected such allegations as false, describing them as “disgusting lies.”
The latest search follows another incident involving Omar in January, when an assailant sprayed her during a town hall meeting in Minneapolis with a substance later identified as vinegar. The incident occurred hours after Trump criticised her at a rally in Iowa. The attacker was recently sentenced to 14 months in prison.
Omar Condemns Search
Omar condemned the search in a statement posted on X, describing it as an attempt to target political opponents and use federal law enforcement for political purposes.
“For ten years, Trump has targeted me with baseless lies and smear campaigns. This is just the latest escalation in his campaign of political intimidation. I will not be silenced.”

The Justice Department has not provided further details about Monday’s search, leaving the specific allegations under investigation unclear.
With the midterm elections approaching, the operation has intensified an already contentious dispute over Omar and the administration’s treatment of its critics. Democrats have questioned the timing, while the available official statement confirms only that the search was authorised by a judge and connected to an ongoing federal investigation.
