Cheltenham Town manager Steve Cotterill has praised Richarlison’s attitude as “immaculate” after the Tottenham Hotspur forward made a surprise appearance for the club’s under-21 side in Tuesday night’s EFL Trophy encounter.
The Brazilian international found the net in a 2-2 draw against Cheltenham before converting his penalty in a shootout that Tottenham eventually lost 7-6. His performance offered a rare opportunity to return to competitive action after several difficult months at the north London club.
Despite his uncertain future at Tottenham, Richarlison impressed Cotterill with his professionalism and commitment throughout the contest.
“To be fair to him, with a lot of talk about our lads playing against him, Richarlison’s attitude was immaculate tonight. He was really, really good and his attitude was great.”

The 29-year-old forward has endured a frustrating spell after being informed that he was not part of Tottenham’s first-team plans for the 2026/27 campaign.

He has not featured for the senior side since their opening-day defeat to Brentford on August 22, leaving him to train away from the first-team group and seek opportunities to regain match fitness.
His situation became more complicated after potential moves to Trabzonspor and Brazilian outfit Vasco da Gama failed to materialise.
Also, talks over a possible return to former club Everton collapsed during the final days before the English transfer window closed, leaving the forward without a permanent solution to his club future.
Richarlison Seizes Rare Opportunity
Richarlison’s appearance against Cheltenham provided a valuable opportunity to demonstrate his readiness to compete despite his uncertain status at Tottenham.
The forward marked his return to competitive action with a composed first-time finish in the 56th minute, showcasing the quality that has made him a regular member of Brazil’s national team setup.
He subsequently stepped up during the penalty shootout, converting his effort, although Tottenham’s youngsters ultimately suffered defeat.

Moreover, his willingness to participate in the fixture earned admiration from Cotterill, who welcomed the opportunity for his players to test themselves against an established international forward.
The Cheltenham manager admitted he was pleased when he discovered Richarlison had been included in Tottenham’s team sheet, explaining that the experience gave his players an insight into the standards required at the highest level.
Cotterill also highlighted the forward’s professionalism, noting that he could easily have approached the match without much enthusiasm given the circumstances surrounding his season.
Instead, Richarlison appeared fully engaged throughout the contest, making a positive impression on the opposition players and coaching staff. The encounter also attracted a decent crowd, giving Cheltenham’s players an opportunity to compete against a footballer accustomed to performing on major stages.
Following his goal, Tottenham’s academy players joined Richarlison in performing his trademark pigeon celebration, adding a light-hearted moment to an evening that offered the Brazilian a welcome return to action.
He later expressed his relief at getting back to playing, writing on Instagram: “Happy to do what I love the most in life, I was missing it!”
Tottenham’s Struggles Add to Uncertainty
Richarlison’s situation comes at a difficult time for Tottenham, who have struggled to find consistency during the opening stages of the campaign.
The club have yet to record a Premier League victory and have managed just one win across all competitions this season.
With three draws and three defeats in six Premier League matches, their performances have raised concerns about their early-season form, particularly their attacking output of just three goals.

Meanwhile, head coach Roberto De Zerbi and the rest of the senior squad are in Marbella for warm-weather training as they prepare for their Premier League meeting with in-form Coventry City who have won their last two games after also losing their first four since their return to the English top-flight.
Richarlison’s absence from the senior setup means he remains on the fringes despite Tottenham’s difficulties in front of goal.
However, his appearance for the under-21s could provide an opportunity to maintain his fitness while awaiting further developments regarding his future.
Although Tuesday’s performance demonstrated his willingness to remain professional, it remains unclear whether he will receive another opportunity with the first team or whether Tottenham will consider alternative arrangements when the transfer market reopens.
For now, the Brazilian faces an uncertain period at a club where he has struggled to establish a consistent role. His display against Cheltenham, however, offered a reminder of his ability and earned him praise at a time when opportunities to showcase his qualities have been limited.
