Brighton and Hove Albion defender Pascal Struijk has had his red card against Sunderland rescinded following a successful appeal against his dismissal in Saturday’s Premier League encounter at the Stadium of Light.

The decision means the Dutch defender is free to feature in Brighton’s next domestic fixture against Crystal Palace this weekend after the red card was overturned on the grounds of wrongful dismissal.

Struijk was shown a straight red card in the 57th minute after referee Thomas Bramall reviewed a challenge on Sunderland forward Wilson Isidor following an intervention by Video Assistant Referee (VAR) Neil Davies.

However, the decision has now been overturned after an independent disciplinary review, allowing the Seagulls to retain the services of their summer signing without a suspension. “Following a successful claim of wrongful dismissal, the red card given against Pascal Struijk at Sunderland has been rescinded and he will now be available for selection against Crystal Palace,” Brighton confirmed on social media.

The incident also raised questions about the threshold for VAR intervention in potential denial of an obvious goalscoring opportunity situations.

Controversial VAR Intervention

The incident occurred when Isidor attempted to run onto a through-ball, with Struijk adjudged to have committed a foul that prevented the Sunderland forward from advancing towards goal.

Neither Bramall nor his assistant initially penalised the challenge. However, VAR official Davies subsequently recommended an on-field review, prompting the referee to examine the footage on the pitchside monitor.

After watching the replay several times, Bramall decided that Struijk had denied Isidor an obvious goalscoring opportunity and produced a straight red card.

The dismissal was met with disbelief from Brighton’s players, who disagreed with the referee’s interpretation of the challenge.

The questions raised were whether Isidor would have reached the ball before Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen, suggesting that uncertainty over the forward’s chances of getting possession undermined the case for a red card.

It was a situation that represented a possible goalscoring opportunity rather than an obvious one, a distinction that is central to determining whether a player should be dismissed for denying a clear chance to score.

Consequently, the successful appeal has brought the incident back into focus, particularly regarding the extent to which VAR should influence subjective decisions involving potential red cards.

Brighton Escape Suspension Blow

The reversal is a significant boost for Brighton, who would otherwise have faced the prospect of losing Struijk for a subsequent league fixture.

A straight red card for denying an obvious goalscoring opportunity ordinarily carries a suspension under football’s disciplinary regulations. However, a successful wrongful dismissal appeal removes the associated ban arising from the overturned decision.

Under the established disciplinary process, clubs can challenge straight red cards through the relevant football authorities. An independent regulatory commission considers the evidence before deciding whether the dismissal should stand or overturned.

The process is separate from the referee’s on-field decision. Once a match has ended, the referee cannot personally overturn a dismissal, leaving any formal challenge to the appropriate disciplinary body.

In Struijk’s case, Brighton’s successful claim means the original dismissal will not prevent him from playing against Crystal Palace, provided he remains otherwise available for selection.

The outcome also spares the defender an immediate suspension at a crucial point in his adaptation to life at the Amex Stadium.

Struijk Settles Into Brighton Career

Struijk joined Brighton from Leeds United during the summer in a reported £20 million move and was making his second Premier League start for the club when he was dismissed against Sunderland.

The defender’s arrival strengthened Brighton’s defensive options, making his availability particularly important as manager Fabian Hürzeler continues to shape his squad for the campaign.

Despite playing with 10 men following the dismissal, Brighton secured a 2-0 victory over Sunderland, maintaining their positive start to the season.

The result strengthened their position in the league standings, with the Seagulls sitting third, five points behind leaders Manchester City at the time of the report.

For Struijk, the decision offers an opportunity to continue building his place in the team after arriving from Leeds, while Brighton can turn their attention to the next fixture with their defensive options intact.

The successful appeal also provides a reminder that disciplinary decisions made during matches remain subject to review, particularly when a dismissal follows a VAR intervention and the circumstances surrounding an alleged denial of a goalscoring opportunity are disputed.
