Ghana’s dancehall king Shatta Wale is set to deliver an electrifying live performance as part of the grand celebrations for the 2026 Hogbetsotso Festival in the Volta Region.
The Hogbetsotso Festival, also known as Hogbetsotso Za, is one of Ghana’s most significant traditional celebrations. It is observed annually by the chiefs and people of the Anlo Traditional Area in the Volta Region.
This year’s edition marks the 64th celebration of the festival and will climax on Saturday, November 7, 2026, in Anloga. The theme for the 2026 festival is “Anlo, Our Heritage and Our Values: Striving to Build One Ghana for a Better Tomorrow.”
The festival commemorates the historic migration of the Anlo-Ewe people from Notsie in present-day Togo to their current homeland. According to oral tradition, the people escaped the tyrannical rule of King Agorkoli by softening the mud walls that surrounded the town and walking backwards to confuse their pursuers.
Meaning of Hogbetsotso
The name “Hogbetsotso” itself refers to the festival of the “hoedown” or the act of moving forward after the great escape. Over the decades, the celebration has evolved from a purely traditional observance into a major cultural and tourism event that blends ancient rituals with contemporary entertainment.
Activities for the 2026 edition began as early as September 22 and include community clean-ups with both physical and spiritual significance, school engagements, quizzes for basic school pupils, a mini-Hogbetsotso Za, reconciliation rites known as Nugbidodo, a health walk, and the ceremonial sitting-in-state of the Awoamefia of Anlo, Togbi Sri III, together with his paramount chiefs.
The grand durbar of chiefs is scheduled for the morning of November 7 at Hogbe Park in Anloga. Organisers have also planned a dinner and awards night on the same day, followed by a Hogbe Beach Concert on November 8 at Eli Beach Resort in Tegbi.

This year’s festival has attracted high-profile attention beyond the Anlo traditional area. The Overlord of the Gonja Kingdom, Yagbonwura Bii-Kunuto Jewu Soale I, has accepted an invitation to attend the grand durbar as Guest of Honour.
He is expected to deliver a speech, a move organisers say will strengthen cultural ties between the Gonja and Anlo people and promote national unity in line with the festival theme.
Entertainment has become an increasingly important component of Hogbetsotso in recent years, helping to attract younger audiences while supporting local businesses and tourism. Dancehall artiste Stonebwoy, who hails from the area, was earlier announced as a headliner.
He is billed to perform at Lalana Beach in Anloga on the evening of November 7 at 8 p.m., the night of the grand durbar. The addition of Shatta Wale to the entertainment lineup has raised the profile of the celebrations even further.
Shatta Wale, whose real name is Charles Nii Armah Mensah Jr., remains one of Ghana’s most popular and influential musicians. Known for his high-energy stage performances, massive fan base known as the Shatta Movement, and a string of hit songs, he has consistently drawn large crowds to his shows across the country and abroad.
His recent birthday concert, ShattaFest 2026, held at the Accra Sports Stadium on October 17, was widely described as a major success, with a star-studded lineup and emotional moments that underscored his enduring connection with fans.
The confirmation of his Hogbetsotso performance comes at a time when the festival organisers are deliberately using entertainment to boost tourism, empower local businesses and deepen community participation.

Officials have emphasised that the celebration is designed not only to honour the past but also to inspire present and future generations to uphold cultural values while contributing to national development.
Public Reaction
Social media reactions to the announcement reflected the competitive yet passionate nature of Ghana’s music scene. Some fans celebrated Shatta Wale’s inclusion as further proof of his dominance and ability to command major stages, while others referenced Stonebwoy’s earlier billing and speculated about possible joint appearances or separate high-energy sets.
One commenter noted that both artistes have been confirmed, suggesting the festival could offer fans a rare double dose of top-tier dancehall entertainment in the same celebration period.
For the people of Anlo and visitors expected from across Ghana and the diaspora, the 2026 Hogbetsotso Festival promises a rich blend of tradition, pageantry and modern entertainment. The grand durbar will showcase traditional displays by the various states of the Anlo Dukor, the presence of national dignitaries, and the symbolic sitting-in-state of the Awoamefia.
Later in the evening and the following day, music lovers will have the opportunity to experience live performances by some of the country’s biggest stars against the scenic backdrop of the Volta Region’s coastal communities.
As preparations intensify in the coming weeks, organisers are expected to release further details on exact venues, start times and any additional artistes for the entertainment segments. With both Shatta Wale and Stonebwoy on the bill, the 2026 edition of Hogbetsotso is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated cultural events of the year, combining deep historical roots with the vibrant energy of contemporary Ghanaian music.
Fans of the dancehall king and supporters of the festival are already counting down to what promises to be a memorable night of culture, unity and unforgettable performances in Anloga.
