Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) manager Luis Enrique believes the key to neutralising Lamine Yamal is to keep possession when his side faces FC Barcelona in a crucial UEFA Champions League encounter at the Parc des Princes on Tuesday.

The Spanish winger has emerged as one of Barcelona’s most influential players this season, combining creativity, goalscoring ability and exceptional dribbling to trouble opposing defences. His impressive performances have made him one of the major talking points ahead of the European showdown.

Asked how PSG intend to contain the 19-year-old, Enrique offered a straightforward tactical solution.

“You must have the ball. If we have the ball, Lamine doesn’t have the ball.”

The former Barcelona and Spain manager’s response highlights the importance of possession in his approach to the game, with PSG seeking to limit the opportunities Yamal gets to influence proceedings in the final third.

Yamal has enjoyed a remarkable start to the campaign, registering 19 goal involvements in 11 appearances, with nine goals and 10 assists. His contribution in Europe has also been significant, with four assists and one goal in two Champions League outings.

Consequently, Barcelona will be counting on their young star to maintain his outstanding form against the reigning European champions, although PSG’s ability to control possession could prove telling in determining how much influence he has on the contest.

PSG Target Possession to Neutralise Yamal

Enrique’s comments suggest that PSG intend to reduce Yamal’s involvement by controlling the tempo and limiting Barcelona’s opportunities to launch attacks.

However, denying the winger the ball is easier said than done. Yamal’s ability to receive possession in tight spaces, beat defenders one-on-one and create chances from the right flank makes him a constant threat, even when opponents attempt to restrict his involvement.

PSG will therefore need more than sustained possession. Their ability to press Barcelona effectively, recover the ball quickly and prevent the visitors from progressing through midfield will be equally important.

Vitinha, meanwhile, dismissed the suggestion that PSG would approach the encounter with fear of the Spanish international, acknowledging his quality while stressing that Barcelona possess threats beyond their teenage sensation.

“To be honest, I would not say fear. He’s a great player, one of the best in the world. What he’s doing is incredible. He’s special, but tomorrow we’ll be facing a great team, not just Lamine Yamal.”

The midfielder’s assessment reflects the broader challenge facing PSG. While Yamal’s influence is considerable, Barcelona’s attacking threat extends beyond one player, meaning PSG must remain organised against the collective movement and creativity of the Catalan side.

Barcelona and PSG Bring Perfect European Records

Both teams enter the encounter with maximum points from their opening two Champions League league-phase matches, making the contest an important early test of their European ambitions.

PSG will draw confidence from their impressive 4-2 victory over Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium last week, a result that ended the English side’s winning run. Barcelona, meanwhile, strengthened their credentials with a commanding 4-1 victory over Galatasaray in Turkey.

Those results underline the attacking quality available to both managers, setting the stage for a contest in which possession, pressing intensity and efficiency in front of goal could prove crucial.

PSG head into the fixture after heavily rotating their squad during a 3-1 domestic league victory over Strasbourg at the weekend. The decision could leave Enrique with fresher options for the Barcelona test, although the effectiveness of his selection will ultimately be judged by how his team performs on the pitch.

Barcelona Seek to Reverse Recent Head-to-Head Trend

Despite Barcelona’s strong form, recent meetings between the clubs offer PSG reason for optimism.

The French side have won three of their last five encounters with Barcelona, drawing one and losing one.

Also, their most recent European meeting during the previous season’s league phase ended in a 2-1 victory for PSG at the Camp Nou, achieved with a significantly weakened side.

Barcelona’s only victory in the last five meetings came in the first leg of their 2023-2024 Champions League quarter-final, when they secured a 3-2 win in Paris. However, PSG responded emphatically in the return leg, winning 4-1 in Barcelona to advance 6-4 on aggregate.

That comeback remains a reminder of PSG’s ability to punish Barcelona when the latter struggle to manage the game’s momentum. For the Catalans, Tuesday’s encounter offers an opportunity to challenge that recent dominance while demonstrating that their current winning form can translate into success against Europe’s reigning champions.

For PSG, the task is to reproduce the intensity and tactical discipline that have troubled Barcelona in recent meetings. Enrique’s possession-based approach could help restrict Yamal, but it will also require his players to remain alert to Barcelona’s ability to exploit spaces when possession changes hands.

With both sides boasting perfect records in the competition and arriving on the back of convincing victories, the encounter promises a stern examination of their respective credentials.

Whether Enrique’s proposed solution can contain Yamal while giving PSG control of the contest remains one of the night’s biggest questions.

But Barcelona will hope their young star can find a way through and help end PSG’s recent superiority in this heavyweight European rivalry.
