Ghana’s U-15 boys have advanced to the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA U-15 World Cup and Festival in Azerbaijan after securing a 2-1 victory over Korea Republic in the Round of 32 on Wednesday, October 28.

The National U-15 Boys, popularly known as the Black Comets, maintained their perfect record at the inaugural tournament, overcoming a disciplined South Korean side to extend their winning run to six matches.

Abdul Aziz Issah continued his impressive scoring form by finding the net for Ghana, while an own goal from the Korean defence proved decisive as the West Africans secured their place in the next round.

The victory takes Ghana’s goal tally to 29 in six matches, underlining their attacking strength in a competition designed to provide young footballers with valuable international experience.

Ghana entered the knockout stage after finishing top of Group W with five victories from five matches, collecting 15 points and scoring 27 goals while conceding just three.

Their group-stage campaign featured a 4-1 win over Uzbekistan, a 7-1 triumph against Myanmar, consecutive 7-0 victories over Guam and the Bahamas, and a 2-1 success against Kazakhstan.

Ghana Maintain Momentum in Azerbaijan

The win over South Korea represents another important step for Ghana as they pursue success in the maiden edition of the FIFA U-15 World Cup and Festival.

The Black Comets have demonstrated their ability to score heavily against different opposition, but their latest result also highlights their capacity to navigate a more competitive encounter in the knockout phase.

With 29 goals scored and only four conceded across their six matches, Ghana have established themselves as one of the tournament’s productive attacking sides.

Their progress also offers an opportunity for the young players to gain experience in high-pressure international fixtures, an important component of their development as they prepare for future youth national-team assignments.

Ghana will now prepare for the Round of 16, with their next opponent to be determined by the outcome of the corresponding fixture in their section of the knockout bracket. A victory in that encounter would take the team another step closer to the tournament’s latter stages.

FIFA Tournament Designed to Develop Young Talent

The FIFA U-15 World Cup and Festival is a new international youth football competition introduced to widen access to high-level matches and strengthen talent development across FIFA’s 211 member associations.

The inaugural boys’ edition, staged in Baku, Azerbaijan, has attracted 189 member associations, bringing together more than 3,000 players, coaches and officials. The scale of participation gives countries with different footballing traditions an opportunity to compete internationally at an early stage.

FIFA’s central objective is to give every talent a chance by ensuring that young players receive meaningful competitive exposure, encounter different playing styles and learn from football cultures beyond their own countries.

The competition uses an eight-a-side format, with two 20-minute halves, smaller pitches, rolling substitutions and kick-ins. These adjustments are intended to encourage more involvement in the game, improve technical development and create an environment suited to players aged 15 and under.

Beyond the matches, the festival includes educational activities, meetings with FIFA Legends and awareness campaigns. The shared environment also allows players and coaches to exchange experiences and build relationships across national boundaries.

Unlike conventional tournaments in which early elimination can end a team’s competitive campaign, the festival’s structure is designed to ensure that every participating team continues playing through the final day. Teams progress into different performance tiers according to their results, providing further opportunities to compete against appropriately matched opposition.

The first edition marks the beginning of a longer-term initiative, with a girls’ tournament scheduled for 2027 and separate boys’ and girls’ competitions planned annually from 2028.

For Ghana, the immediate priority is to sustain their winning momentum and translate their impressive group-stage form into further progress in Azerbaijan.
