Two teachers of Techiman Senior High School (SHS) have been arrested for allegedly assaulting a 17-year-old student in an incident captured on video. The Ministry of Education has ordered a probe into the matter, and the case has drawn attention to student safety in the country’s senior high schools.
Police named the teachers as Jerry Jones Owusu Bekoe, 37, an English Language teacher, and Ameyaw Adusa, 44, an Information and Communications Technology (ICT) teacher. Both are in police custody assisting with investigations, while the Ghana Education Service (GES) has begun its own inquiry.
Police Detail the Alleged Assault
The Bono East Regional Police Command said in a press release dated November 1, 2026, that preliminary investigations indicate the incident occurred on October 23, 2026, at about 4 p.m. The two teachers allegedly accosted and assaulted the Form Three student on the school premises.

According to the police, the assault was reportedly triggered by allegations that the student had earlier attacked two Form One students. The police statement does not say whether those allegations have been verified, and nothing in the information released so far establishes that the student was at fault. The incident came to public attention after video footage of the assault circulated on social media. The footage showed the two men physically assaulting the student, with one of them stepping on his head. Police arrested the teachers after the video went viral.
Ministry and GES Launch Investigations
The Ministry of Education moved quickly once the video surfaced. Deputy Minister for Education Dr. Clement Abas Apaak said that, at the instance of Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu, he had referred the video to the Director-General of GES for urgent investigation. The Director-General was also directed to apply the necessary sanctions against anyone found culpable.
Dr. Apaak said misconduct would not be tolerated in schools “from any stakeholder,” whether teaching and non-teaching staff, students or parents. He added that the Ministry has a mandate to keep schools safe for students and for teaching and non-teaching staff alike.GES also issued a statement dated October 31, 2026. It described the video as “disturbing” and identified the two teachers involved.

The statement, signed by GES Head of Public Relations Daniel Fenyi, said the school’s disciplinary committee had held an initial hearing into the incident. The committee’s findings are expected to go to GES management through the Regional Directorate in the coming days, to inform further action.GES said the student had received medical attention and was responding positively to treatment. It also urged the public to remain calm while investigations continue. The teachers’ culpability has not yet been esablished, and GES is expected to decide on any disciplinary measures after considering the committee’s findings.
Ministry Flags Rising Indiscipline Cases
The Techiman case comes amid a series of incidents in 2026 involving teachers and students. In June, a teacher at Nyinahini Catholic SHS was arrested after a viral video showed an alleged assault on a female student, which prompted an investigation by GES.In July, the Ministry urged police to intensify the search for a fugitive teacher of Bole SHS. It also expressed concern over what it described as increasing cases of indiscipline involving teachers, heads of schools and students across the country’s educational institutions. The Ministry stressed that discipline remained central to the delivery of quality education.
Authorities Weigh Disciplinary Action
The case is still at an early stage, and several questions remain open. Police have not said when the two teachers may be charged or arraigned, and the findings of the school’s disciplinary committee have yet to be made public. Attempts to obtain comments from the two teachers and the management of Techiman SHS have reportedly been unsuccessful. The teachers have not publicly responded to the allegations.
The case now runs on two tracks. The police investigation will determine whether criminal charges follow, while the GES process will decide on any disciplinary action. The outcome of both will show how the authorities handle cases of alleged violence by teachers against students, an issue the Ministry has already described as a growing concern. For now, the teachers remain in custody, the student is reported to be recovering, and the public is waiting for the findings of the investigations.
