Fitch Predicts Ghana’s Growth Slowdown as Inflation Threatens 2027 Outlook

Ghana’s economic recovery may be gathering strength in 2026, but a fresh warning from Fitch Solutions suggests the country could be heading towards another difficult economic phase as inflationary pressures threaten to undermine growth in 2027.

The UK-based research and intelligence firm has maintained its forecast for Ghana’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth at nearly 6.0% in 2026, reflecting the economy’s resilience amid changing global conditions. However, its latest projections point to a significant loss of momentum next year, with economic growth expected to slow from 5.9% in 2026 to 4.7% in 2027.

The projected slowdown raises concerns about the sustainability of Ghana’s economic recovery, particularly as inflation is expected to accelerate sharply, potentially weakening household purchasing power, constraining consumer spending and increasing pressure on businesses.

Although Ghana has benefited from favourable commodity prices, improving domestic economic conditions and monetary policy easing, Fitch Solutions believes these positive developments may not be enough to prevent a moderation in growth next year.

Ghana’s Growth Outlook Faces a Major Test

Fitch Solutions’ decision to maintain its nearly 6.0% growth forecast for 2026 reflects the relatively strong performance of the Ghanaian economy over the past year.

According to the firm, Ghana has remained largely insulated from global developments, supported by elevated gold prices, low domestic inflation and the transmission of the Bank of Ghana’s (BoG) 1,400 basis points monetary policy easing cycle.

The reduction in interest rates has helped improve domestic financial conditions, potentially creating room for increased economic activity and supporting businesses and households that have faced elevated borrowing costs.

Gold prices have also provided an important cushion for the economy, strengthening export earnings and supporting the country’s external position.

However, the optimism surrounding 2026 may not necessarily extend into the following year.

Fitch Solutions expects economic growth to moderate to 4.7% in 2027, representing a 1.2 percentage-point decline from its 2026 projection of 5.9%.

Such a slowdown could complicate efforts to sustain the country’s economic recovery, particularly if rising inflation begins to reverse some of the gains made in restoring purchasing power and improving business confidence.

Inflation Could Become Ghana’s Biggest Economic Threat

Perhaps the most concerning aspect of Fitch Solutions’ latest assessment is its inflation forecast for 2027.

The firm expects Ghana’s annual average inflation to rise from 4.7% in 2026 to 11.3% in 2027, signalling a potentially difficult period for households and businesses.

The projected increase would represent a substantial reversal of the disinflationary progress recorded in recent months.

Fitch Solutions attributes the anticipated inflation acceleration to unfavourable base effects, rapid money supply growth and higher global food prices associated with El Niño.

These developments could create fresh pressure on the cost of living, particularly if food prices begin rising faster and households are forced to devote a larger share of their income to essential goods and services.

The implications could extend beyond household budgets.

Businesses that depend heavily on imported raw materials, food products, energy and other essential inputs may face renewed operating cost pressures. Such increases could eventually translate into higher consumer prices, further weakening demand.

An inflation rate of 11.3% would also present a challenge to the Bank of Ghana, especially if price pressures become persistent and require a reversal of its recent monetary easing cycle.

Bank of Ghana’s Rate Cuts Could Face a Major Reversal

Another factor expected to weigh on Ghana’s growth prospects is the anticipated slowdown in credit expansion as the Bank of Ghana resumes monetary tightening.

Fitch Solutions believes that higher inflation, combined with slower credit growth, will weaken domestic demand in 2027.

This presents a difficult balancing act for monetary authorities.

The BoG has spent considerable time easing monetary policy to support economic recovery and improve access to credit. However, a renewed inflationary threat could force the central bank to reconsider the pace and direction of its policy decisions.

Any return to tighter monetary conditions could increase borrowing costs, making it more expensive for businesses to finance expansion, purchase equipment and manage working capital.

Households could equally face higher loan repayment obligations, potentially reducing the amount of disposable income available for consumption.

The consequences could be significant, particularly if businesses become more cautious about investment and consumers reduce spending in response to higher prices and borrowing costs.

Gold Prices Offer Ghana a Critical Economic Cushion

Despite the warning about slower growth, Ghana’s external position could remain relatively strong, supported by favourable gold prices.

Fitch Solutions noted that although elevated oil prices have increased the country’s energy import bill, Ghana remains broadly net neutral in oil trade because of production from the Jubilee and TEN offshore fields.

The firm explained that the oil trade deficit was just 0.3% of GDP in the second quarter of 2026.

It also expects gold prices to remain elevated, providing continued support for Ghana’s external balances.

“With our Commodities team forecasting gold prices to remain elevated at US$4,200/oz [per ounce], we expect the current account surplus to remain sizeable at 5.3% of GDP in 2027, supporting Ghana’s reserve position and limiting exchange-rate depreciation”, it added.

This outlook offers some reassurance amid the projected domestic economic slowdown.

A sizeable current account surplus could help strengthen foreign exchange reserves, reduce pressure on the cedi and provide the country with greater protection against external shocks.

Nevertheless, strong export earnings alone may not be sufficient to protect households and businesses from rising domestic prices.

Ghana Must Guard Against a Fresh Economic Setback

Fitch Solutions’ warning also reflects a broader challenge facing Sub-Saharan African economies, where persistent inflation could undermine purchasing power and weaken private consumption and business activity.

The firm noted that a more persistent inflationary environment across the region would create significant headwinds to economic growth in 2027.

While oil-exporting countries could benefit from higher energy prices through stronger export earnings and fiscal revenues, countries facing elevated import costs may encounter additional economic pressures.

Ghana’s position is particularly interesting because its strong gold earnings could support external stability even as domestic inflation threatens economic activity.

The country’s immediate challenge will therefore be to preserve the gains achieved through economic stabilisation while preventing renewed inflationary pressures from undermining growth.

Ultimately, Fitch Solutions’ projections suggest that Ghana could record another year of respectable economic expansion in 2027, but maintaining the pace of recovery will become increasingly difficult.

The expected slowdown from 5.9% to 4.7% is a reminder that stronger GDP growth does not automatically translate into sustained improvements in living standards.

As the country approaches 2027, the ability to contain inflation, maintain exchange-rate stability, support productive lending and protect household purchasing power will be critical to determining whether the current recovery can withstand the pressures ahead.
