GSE Records 12.1 Million Shares Traded Amid Market Volatility

The Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) recorded a significant burst of trading activity, with more than 12.1 million shares changing hands in a single session, even as investors grappled with mixed price movements across the market.

A total of 12,130,104 shares, valued at GH¢42.33 million, were traded during the session, reflecting considerable activity among investors navigating changing market conditions. However, the impressive trading volume did not translate into a broadly positive performance, as declining stocks outnumbered advancing equities.

Out of the 29 listed equities that participated in trading, only five recorded gains, while six ended the session in negative territory. The remaining stocks closed without registering gains or losses.

The latest performance highlights the contrasting forces shaping activity on the local bourse, where selected equities continue to attract buying interest even as selling pressure weighs on other prominent stocks.

Ecobank Commands Trading Floor With 10.1 Million Shares

One of the biggest developments during the session was the overwhelming dominance of Ecobank Transnational Incorporated (ETI) in trading volumes.

The financial institution recorded approximately 10.1 million shares, making it the most actively traded equity on the exchange by a considerable margin.

Its trading volume far exceeded that of the other heavily traded stocks, accounting for the overwhelming majority of shares exchanged during the session.

GCB Bank followed with 619,400 shares, while MTN Ghana recorded 518,113 shares. Kasapreko also attracted considerable activity, with 454,899 shares changing hands.

The concentration of trading activity in Ecobank Transnational suggests that the bank was at the centre of investor activity, although the volume alone does not establish whether the transactions were driven by buying or selling pressure.

The figures also demonstrate how a handful of equities can significantly influence the overall trading statistics of the Ghana Stock Exchange.

With more than 12 million shares exchanged, the session delivered substantial market activity, even as the broader price performance remained divided.

Unilever Ghana Leads Gainers With Stunning 8.86% Jump

While several equities struggled to maintain positive momentum, Unilever Ghana emerged as the standout performer, recording the strongest share price appreciation of the session.

The consumer goods company surged by 8.86%, closing at GH¢43.00 per share and establishing itself as the biggest gainer among the equities that traded.

Its performance placed it comfortably ahead of Meridian-Marshall Holdings, which gained 7.14%, making it the second-best-performing stock.

Intravenous Infusions also advanced by 1.85%, while Enterprise Group recorded a more modest appreciation of 1.19%.

The gains suggest that investor interest remained strong in selected equities despite the broader weakness reflected in the market indices.

Unilever Ghana’s impressive advance is particularly notable because it occurred during a session in which the benchmark Composite Index suffered a decline.

The performance also reinforces the importance of individual stock movements in determining investment returns, as positive developments in selected companies can occur even when the wider market is under pressure.

TotalEnergies Suffers Biggest Loss as MTN Ghana Slides

On the losing side, TotalEnergies Marketing Ghana endured the heaviest share price decline, falling 6.28% to close at GH¢37.48 per share.

The company’s performance made it the biggest loser among the equities that participated in the session, reflecting significant downward pressure on its share price.

Digicut Production & Advertising followed with a 5.13% decline, while SIC Insurance Company shed 2.8%.

MTN Ghana, one of the exchange’s prominent and actively traded equities, also finished in negative territory after losing 1.93%.

The decline in MTN Ghana is particularly noteworthy given its position among the most actively traded stocks, with 518,113 shares changing hands during the session.

These losses contributed to the market’s negative overall performance, reinforcing the uneven distribution of investor interest across the exchange.

GSE Composite Index Sheds 131.87 Points

The weakness among several listed equities was reflected in the performance of the benchmark GSE Composite Index (GSE-CI), which declined by 131.87 points, representing a 0.92% drop.

The index closed at 14,155.02 points, reversing some of its recent gains and highlighting the pressure facing the broader equity market.

Despite the latest decline, the Composite Index remains positive over the short and longer-term measurement periods. It recorded a one-week gain of 0.73%, although its four-week performance showed a loss of 0.47%.

More significantly, the index has maintained a remarkable year-to-date gain of 61.4%, demonstrating the substantial appreciation recorded by Ghanaian equities since the beginning of 2026.

The GSE Financial Stocks Index (GSE-FSI) also experienced a marginal decline, dropping 0.04% to close at 7,385.18 points.

The financial stocks benchmark recorded a one-week gain of 0.36%, but its four-week performance remained negative at 1.77%. Its year-to-date return stood at 58.92%.

These figures indicate that although the market has experienced periods of weakness, its broader performance in 2026 remains considerably strong.

GH¢266.2 Billion Market Cap Keeps GSE Among Investor Watchlists

Despite the latest setbacks, the Ghana Stock Exchange continues to command a substantial market valuation.

The total market capitalisation stood at GH¢266.2 billion, equivalent to approximately US$22.8 billion, underscoring the size of the listed equity market.

The combination of substantial trading activity, sharp movements in selected equities and continued positive year-to-date returns presents a market with opportunities as well as considerable risks.

Unilever Ghana’s 8.86% appreciation demonstrates the potential for individual stocks to deliver impressive gains, while the declines recorded by TotalEnergies Marketing Ghana and Digicut Production & Advertising highlight the possibility of equally significant losses.

With the Composite Index still up 61.4% since the beginning of the year, the latest decline does little to erase the broader rally. However, the uneven performance across equities suggests that investors cannot assume that every listed company will benefit equally from the market’s impressive annual gains.

As trading continues, attention will remain on the stocks attracting the strongest investor interest, the sustainability of recent price movements and whether the market can regain positive momentum after its latest decline.

The 12.1 million shares traded offer evidence of sustained activity on the exchange, but the contrasting performances of individual equities show that the battle between buyers and sellers remains far from settled.
