Cristiano Ronaldo has announced his retirement from international football, bringing an extraordinary 23-year career with Portugal to an end after establishing himself as the country’s greatest-ever footballer.

The 41-year-old confirmed his decision on Thursday, November 5, 2026, through a social media announcement and a video statement, ending speculation about his future with the national team.

Ronaldo departs with a remarkable international record of 234 appearances and 146 goals, both men’s world records, having represented Portugal across six European Championships and six FIFA World Cups.

In a statement confirming his decision, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner paid tribute to his country and the privilege of wearing its famous number seven shirt.

“Portugal will always be in my heart. To the Portuguese, the time has come to hang up the number 7 of our national team. I never felt it was exclusively mine, but for 23 years I had the privilege and the responsibility of wearing it.”

His announcement brings to a close one of the most influential international careers in football history, spanning generations of Portuguese football and transforming the country’s standing in the global game.

From Teenage Prodigy to Portugal’s Greatest

Ronaldo made his senior international debut on August 20, 2003, in a 1-0 friendly victory over Kazakhstan, coming on as a substitute for Luís Figo. At just 18, he was beginning a journey that would eventually make him the most capped and highest-scoring player in men’s international football.

His first major international tournament came at the 2004 European Championship, hosted by Portugal. Aged 19, Ronaldo announced himself on the international stage, scoring against Greece in the opening match before finding the net again in the semi-final victory over the Netherlands.

Portugal reached the final, where they suffered a disappointing 1-0 defeat to Greece, denying the young forward an opportunity to celebrate a major international trophy on home soil.

That disappointment would become part of a much longer journey towards international success.

Over the next two decades, Ronaldo featured in six European Championships (2004, 2008, 2012, 2016, 2020 and 2024) and six FIFA World Cups (2006, 2010, 2014, 2018, 2022 and 2026).

The Al Nassr forward became the first footballer to score at six different World Cup tournaments, further underlining his extraordinary longevity. His 11 World Cup goals and 14 European Championship goals also established him among the most prolific players in the history of both competitions.

Ronaldo additionally represented Portugal at the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup and several editions of the UEFA Nations League, extending his influence beyond the two major international tournaments.

Three International Trophies and a Lasting Legacy

Ronaldo’s greatest achievement with Portugal came at Euro 2016 in France, where he captained the national team to its first major senior international trophy.

Having endured years of disappointment in previous tournaments, Portugal finally conquered Europe by defeating hosts France 1-0 after extra time in the final, courtesy of Éder’s 109th-minute winner.

Ronaldo’s involvement in the final was unfortunately cut short after he suffered a knee injury in the opening 25 minutes. However, he remained on the sidelines, encouraging his teammates and celebrating their historic achievement.

The triumph was particularly significant because Ronaldo became the captain who led Portugal to its maiden major international title, changing the country’s footballing history.

He subsequently added two UEFA Nations League titles to his collection, captaining Portugal to victory in the inaugural 2019 competition before repeating the achievement in 2025.

The 2019 triumph came after a 1-0 victory over the Netherlands in the final, while Portugal defeated Spain on penalties in the 2025 final following a 2-2 draw.

His international career also included numerous individual records, including becoming the first player to reach 100 international goals in men’s football and subsequently extending the record to 146.

Beyond the statistics and silverware, his influence helped Portugal establish itself as a consistent contender in major international competitions.

Retirement Closes an Extraordinary Chapter

At 41, Ronaldo’s decision brings an end to a remarkable period of service to his country, although his final departure will come after the November international break, according to reports.

His retirement also follows a career in which he experienced several changes in Portugal’s coaching setup, played alongside different generations of footballers and maintained his position as the national team’s central figure.

Despite his individual achievements, the FIFA World Cup remained the major international prize that eluded him. Portugal’s best performance during his international career was reaching the semi-finals in 2006, when they eventually finished fourth.

His final international chapter will therefore be remembered for the trophies he delivered, the records he established and the elusive World Cup title that remained beyond his reach.

For Portugal, replacing a player who contributed 146 goals and 234 appearances will represent a significant transition as a new generation takes responsibility for the national team.

Al Nassr and the Pursuit of 1,000 Goals

With international football behind him, Ronaldo will now concentrate on his club career with Saudi Arabian side Al Nassr, where he continues to pursue another historic achievement.

The Portuguese superstar is closing in on 1,000 official senior career goals, a milestone no footballer has officially reached under the generally accepted record of competitive senior goals for club and country.

Following his hat-trick against Al Kholood on October 29, 2026, Ronaldo’s career tally stood at 985 goals, leaving him just 15 strikes away from the extraordinary landmark.

He has scored for Sporting CP, Manchester United, Real Madrid, Juventus and Al Nassr, alongside his 146 goals for Portugal.

Reaching 1,000 goals would add another unprecedented achievement to a career already decorated with five Ballon d’Or awards, five UEFA Champions League titles, domestic league championships in England, Spain and Italy, and three major international trophies with Portugal.

At Al Nassr, the former Real Madrid and Manchester United forward will have the opportunity to continue chasing that target without the additional demands of international football.

His retirement closes a defining chapter in Portuguese football, but Ronaldo’s pursuit of football history is far from over.

At 985 goals, the 1,000-goal milestone is now firmly within sight.
