Executive Secretary of the Civil and Local Government Staff Association of Ghana (CLOGSAG), Dr Isaac Bampoe Addo, has disclosed that the Association will embark on a nationwide strike come January 22, to demand better conditions of service.

Executive Secretary of the Civil and Local Government Staff Association of Ghana (CLOGSAG), Dr Isaac Bampoe Addo.

Executive Secretary of the Civil and Local Government Staff Association of Ghana (CLOGSAG), Dr Isaac Bampoe Addo, has disclosed that the Association will embark on a nationwide strike come January 22, to demand better conditions of service.

According to him, there has not been any communication on their proposed salary structure which was sent to the Finance Ministry after a year of constant reminders.  Mr Addo revealed that the Association feels rejected and are left with no option other than to embark on the strike action.

“We at the National Secretariat, are taking steps to declare a nationwide strike on January 20, 2022. Come that day, all of us are staying at home, we won’t work… This business of monkey dey work, baboon dey chop, we won’t allow it. We’ve had various national executive council meetings on this issue, and I think our patience has run out. This is justice denied… Better conditions of service are not won on a silver platter, they are fought for, and this is the time to fight for ours”.

Mr Addo explained that CLOGSAG has realised that all other services had an enhanced salary structure apart from the civil service. Elaborating on the challenges of the Association, Mr Addo intimated that what was proposed by CLOGSAG before the joint meeting of the Local Government Service Council and the Civil Service Council was based on what was happening in other services.

Mr Addo revealed that the Association arrived at its salary structure based on what others also have and presented it to the joint meeting, which was accepted. Following this, he noted that the proposed salary structure went before cabinet, which directed the matter to be dealt with.

On his part, the Central Regional Secretary of CLOGSAG, Adam Nuhu, called on all members to be resolute and embark on the strike should government fail to fulfil its terms and conditions by January. He lauded members for their hard work towards the country’s development.

Similarly, the Municipal Chief Executive for Upper Denkyira East, Ebenezer Forson Appiah, commended the workers of CLOSAG for contributing towards the development of the municipality.

On February 19, 2020, CLOGSAG announced to embark on a similar strike on March 3 over government’s refusal to honour its demand for a 15% increment in premium for its members.

It revealed that only ten percent interim premium had been paid. Following this, CLOGSAG demanded that notice should be given to the National Labour Commission and their employer that, on 3rd March 2020, members of CLOGSAG would be embarking on a nationwide strike to demand the full implementation of the 16th August 2016 Memorandum of Understanding between them.

A year prior in September 2019, members of CLOGSAG threatened to embark on a strike action if their issues were not resolved within two weeks. The Association warned against any move to derail the implementation of their three-tier pension scheme for its members which was scheduled to take off on January 1, 2020.
