E-levy: It’s all About the Money; What About the People? – Shatta Wale Queries Government

M.Cby M.C

Reading Time: 4 mins read
Shatta Wale, has asked his admirers not to engage in violence before, during, and after the December 7 presidential and parliamentary elections.

Shatta Wale, a Ghanaian entertainer and dancehall artiste.

Shatta Wale has joined the masses against the controversial electronic levy tax. According to the dancehall musician, it is very insensitive not to think about the voices of the people who voted the leaders into power.

Shatta Wale’s speech has received much approval from Ghanaians as most side with him on the issue of accountability and negotiations. The video of the artiste speaking to power on the E-levy issue has generated a buzz, different from his usual rants.

In the video, Shatta Wale acknowledges the potential returns of E-levy but chastises decision-makers for not showing proof of other tax deductions.

“Everybody is talking about E-levy. Yes, it’s nice. You understand. But create measures. Create things for the citizens not to complain so that when you do this, we will understand that we are all building it. Don’t work as the country is yours. Work with us”.

Shatta Wale

Shatta Wale referenced America where according to him “system is working” and cited structures that benefit and makes life easy for the people abroad.

“You people say you want to do E-levy, yeah, we understand. It is everywhere in the world. Have our leaders done some for us? Have they created something like that for us? No! And how much does it even take to create those things”.

Shatta Wale

Shatta Wale admonished the government to listen to the people who entrusted into their care the votes that brought them into power.

“When you people wake up, then you decide in parliament, then you just bring the thing out for people. But it won’t affect your mother, fathers and your generations because that is what you people are securing. But have you taught about your classmate Kwame, who was so intelligent but couldn’t get the opportunity that you’ve gotten? Kwame never had money in school, but he was always the first in class. How will his parents survive if there’s a decision like this? Have you thought about it? No!

“You only think about how you will bring it and get your money. You just bring it to the people, and you hear them complain. You don’t pay attention to the people, and these are the same people that put their thumbs on the paper to vote for Presidents”.

Shatta Wale

It appears that after Ghanaians backlashed the entertainment industry players for not speaking against the E-levy, several of such players have now come out to do so. Popular Ghanaian hiplife artist and rapper Kwaw Kese waded into the controversial conversation. According to him the new tax measure is “unnecessary and pointless”. He also argued that Ghanaians are not supposed to pay the tax.

“I don’t think it’s necessary. Nobody has to pay E-levy. It is not done anywhere. It doesn’t make sense. Our leaders are desperately trying to push it on us. Then it means something is wrong somewhere”.

Kwaw Kese bemoaned the continuous hardship in the country and stated that he would have relieved members of government from their duties if he had the opportunity to do so.

“If I am given the chance to clean, I will get rid of all the people in government. Our leaders have to be gotten rid of and replaced with new ones.”

Kwaw Kese

The ‘Abordam’ crooner further lamented the consistent increase of fuel prices in the country and described it as worrying.

“Let us try to fix what is not right. The increase in petrol is over worrying. Our leaders are also fighting over e-levy and how they can scam the people. The whole governance of the country needs an overhaul so we can start afresh because things are not going on well”.
