Ekow Afedzie, Managing Director of the Ghana Stock Exchange, is set to retire from his position later this year after 31 years of dedicated service.
Ekow Afedzie, who was appointed as the Managing Director of the Exchange on January 1, 2020 has hinted that he will retire from active service in November, 2022.
Commenting on his exit, Mr. Afedzie expressed gratitude to the Council of the Exchange chaired by Abena Osei-Poku, Managing Director of Absa Bank, for its unswerving support and commitment to the development of the local bourse.
“I wish to express my sincere thanks and gratitude to the Council for their unwavering support and commitment to the development of the Exchange. My deepest appreciation also goes out to our stakeholders: Licensed Dealing Members, Ghana Fixed Income Dealers, Associate Members, Listed Companies and the financial media houses for their unflinching support towards the growth of the capital market.
“I wish to also show my appreciation to my management colleagues and staff for their commitment to the development of the Exchange for all the 31 years that I have been part of this great organisation.”

Mr. Ekow Afedzie indicated that he has utmost faith in the managers and the staff he is leaving behind, knowing that they are competent to hold the fort in his absence.
“As I bow out to proceed on my retirement, I am very convinced that I am leaving the Exchange in capable hands to continue the great work that we have started to move the Exchange from a frontier market to an emerging market, contributing significantly to the development of the Ghanaian economy.”

Ekow Afedzie’s Time at GSE
Mr. Afedzie was confirmed the MD of the GSE, effective January 1, 2020. Before then, he was acting as Managing Director since August 1, 2019, taking over from Kofi Yamoah.
Before he assumed the role of Managing Director, he was the Deputy Managing Director for 10 years.
Ekow Afedzie has worked with the Ghana Stock Exchange, GSE, since its inception in 1990. He brought on board over 28 years of experience in the capital market, some of which were spent as the Head of Marketing, Research and Systems and as General Manager of the Exchange.
Mr. Afedzie has been associated with many transformational projects at the Ghana Stock Exchange. He coordinated the automation of the trading, clearing and settlement functions of the Exchange as well as the establishment of a depository company for equities. He was also instrumental in the establishment of the Ghana Fixed Income Market (GFIM) and the Ghana Alternative Market (GAX).
Mr. Afedzie is experienced in stock market operations and has participated in many international conferences in that area. He has also made significant contributions to local and international research on stock markets and presented papers on stock market operations at many local and international fora.
Mr. Afedzie’s retirement will definitely create a huge gap to the Ghana Stock Exchange, given the impact he made at during his time as the Managing Director.
