Ghana is a nation steeped in rich oral traditions and literary accomplishments, with a history that boasts a plethora of influential writers, poets, and storytellers.

From the works of Wole Soyinka to the narratives of Ama Ata Aidoo and the poetry of Kofi Awoonor, Ghanaian literature reflects the complexities, beauty, and struggles of its people.

However, despite this rich literary heritage, there is a pressing need for a structured approach (a Ghana Literary Board) to promote and preserve it.

Poet and Art activist Oswald Okaitei is calling for the establishment of a Ghana Literary Board under the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts to boost the country’s literary economy.

In commemoration of World Book Day 2025 on Wednesday, April 23, Oswald, who is also the Organising Secretary of Ghana Association of Writers (GAW) argued that such a board was long overdue and would help promote and market Ghanaian literature both locally and internationally.

According to him, the Ghana Book Development Council, currently under the Ministry of Education, focuses primarily on textbooks and formal education, leaving the literary business and creative economy largely unattended.

“Ghana Book Development Council, as an agency under the Ministry of Education, creates the impression that books are just for formal education/classroom training and that explains the reason for which most publishers (99%) in Ghana are mostly textbooks publishers. It is therefore not a mistake that the council is not so much interested in helping produce another generation of world-class Ghanaian authors but focused on books that are classroom friendly, or books approved by the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA).

“I strongly believe that a Ghana Literary Board will see to Ghanaian literature development, promotion and marketing and be a good reset agenda under the John Dramani Mahama’s Black Star Experience.”

He mentioned that the establishment of Ghana Literary Board would be a significant step towards nationalising the sector, creating job opportunities and projecting Ghanaian literature globally.

A Ghana Literary Board would play a pivotal role in the preservation and promotion of the country’s literary heritage. By curating and supporting literary initiatives, the board could ensure that both traditional and contemporary Ghanaian literature is recognized and celebrated.

This could include organizing literary festivals, workshops, and competitions that not only showcase established authors but also nurture emerging talent.

Such initiatives would create a dynamic literary culture, encouraging the exploration of diverse themes that resonate with both local and international audiences.

Cultural tourism is an increasingly vital sector in the global tourism industry, where travelers seek authentic experiences that connect them to the local culture.

By establishing a Literary Board, Ghana could capitalize on its rich literary tradition to attract tourists interested in exploring the country’s literary landmarks, attending book fairs, and participating in author-led tours.

These initiatives would not only enhance the visitor experience but also generate economic opportunities for local communities. For instance, literary events drive traffic to local businesses, including hotels, restaurants, and bookstores, thereby contributing to the overall economic development of the region.

Literature serves as a mirror reflecting the identity and values of a society. By promoting Ghanaian literature through a dedicated Ghana Literary Board, the country fosters a sense of national pride and unity among its citizens.

Literature that explores themes of resilience, cultural heritage, and social justice resonates deeply with Ghanaians, reinforcing a collective identity.

Additionally, a Ghana Literary Board could encourage the use of local languages in literature, thereby promoting linguistic diversity and inclusivity.

This approach not only honors Ghana’s cultural heritage but also empowers communities by giving them a voice in the national narrative.

In today’s interconnected world, cultural diplomacy plays a crucial role in enhancing a nation’s image on the global stage.

A Ghana Literary Board could serve as a platform for promoting Ghanaian literature internationally, facilitating exchanges between Ghanaian authors and global literary communities.

By participating in international literary festivals and establishing partnerships with foreign literary organizations, Ghana showcases its literary talent and cultural richness, positioning itself as a significant player in the global literary landscape.

This recognition leads to increased tourism, investment, and cultural exchange, further solidifying Ghana’s status as a cultural hub in West Africa.

The establishment of a Ghana Literary Board under the Tourism Ministry is not merely a proposal for cultural enhancement; it is a strategic initiative that addresses the need for preserving Ghana’s literary heritage, promoting cultural tourism, and fostering national identity.

By investing in literature as a cultural asset, Ghana unlocks significant economic opportunities while enriching the lives of its citizens and enhancing its global standing.

The time has come for Ghana to recognize and harness the power of its literary traditions, ensuring that the voices of its past, present, and future are heard and celebrated both locally and internationally.

A Ghana Literary Board is a vital step toward achieving this vision, and it is imperative that stakeholders in government, culture, and the arts come together to make this initiative a reality.
