The rise of explicit songs in popular music reflects broader cultural changes and the evolving landscape of artistic expression.
This phenomenon has sparked a range of concerns among parents, educators, mental health professionals, and policymakers.
The music industry has undergone significant transformations over the past few decades, with the rise of digital streaming platforms, changes in production techniques, and cultural attitudes.
Ghanaian highlife musician, Akwaboah has expressed concerns about the current music produced by some artists and the need to regulate its reach among music consumers.
Akwaboah highlighted his dissatisfaction with the rise of explicit songs, warning that such tracks could hurt the youth.
“In as much as you did the song in your room, it is still for public consumption. And everything you say in your song affects people’s lives. I know great musicians with such words in their songs, but you won’t notice it if you don’t listen to them well. So, I would be glad if we could at least go in that lane, it would be better.”

He urged the music unions in the country to take appropriate measures, such as creating a dedicated streaming platform where fans can access explicit content.
“I think certain songs that have such profane words should be rated so that such songs would not be played on the radio or in music videos. But if a fan wants to listen to or watch a music video of that particular song, there should be a channel or medium where he or she can find it, rather than playing such songs to everyone, including kids.”

Societal norms regarding language, sexuality, and violence have evolved, leading to a greater acceptance of explicit content in art and entertainment.
Many artists argue that explicit songs and lyrics are a form of authentic self-expression, allowing them to convey their experiences and emotions more accurately.
Despite the artistic and commercial motivations behind explicit songs, numerous concerns have been raised about their impact on listeners, particularly young audiences.
Research has shown that exposure to explicit content influences behavior, particularly among impressionable youth.
Repeated exposure to explicit content leads to desensitization, where individuals become less sensitive to violence, sexual objectification, and profanity.
The themes prevalent in many explicit songs—such as violence, heartbreak, and substance abuse, have negative effects on mental health.
Young listeners internalize these messages, leading to feelings of anxiety, depression, or low self-esteem.
Explicit songs often portray unhealthy relationships and unrealistic expectations regarding sex and romance. This skews young listeners’ perceptions of relationships and contributes to issues such as body image concerns and unhealthy sexual behaviors.
Many parents express concern about the content their children are exposed to. The challenge lies in monitoring and discussing music consumption without alienating young listeners or infringing on their autonomy.
Navigating the Debate of Explicit Songs
The conversation surrounding explicit songs is complex, with valid points on both sides.
Advocates for artistic freedom argue that censorship stifles creativity and that individuals should have the right to choose what they listen to.
They contend that explicit content serves as a powerful tool for artists to address social issues, share personal narratives, and connect with listeners on a deeper level.
On the other hand, critics emphasize the need for responsible consumption, especially among younger audiences.
They advocate for increased education about media literacy, encouraging parents and educators to engage in conversations with children about the music they consume.
This includes discussing the meaning behind lyrics, the context of explicit content, and the potential consequences of glorifying certain behaviors.
Akwaboah warned that exposing children to such content could have long-term negative effects, as they may imitate these lifestyles without understanding the consequences.
“If we blindly adopt the Western style and copy it without thought, we will face the consequences. We can talk about love, sex, and weed, but we should be aware of the problems that can arise afterward. Whatever we do, we must be cautious to avoid negative effects on future generations.”

While explicit content serves as a powerful medium for storytelling and self-expression, it also raises significant concerns regarding its impact on listeners, particularly youth.
As society continues to navigate these complexities, fostering open dialogue about music consumption, media literacy, and the implications of explicit content will be essential in promoting a healthy relationship with music in an increasingly digital world.
